Wilson Mill Meadows offers suburban living near interstates

Wilson Mill Meadows is a peaceful west Atlanta suburb whose location near Interstates 285 and 20 allows residents to conveniently get around the metro. “It’s an older neighborhood, and there are a lot of older people who have been here forever,” says Brooke Screws, a Realtor with Heritage Oaks Realty who’s sold homes in the area for six years. “You have close proximity to the city, and it’s close to public transportation.” The community is primarily a residential area, where homes can sit on up to a quarter acre. Parks and shopping areas are nearby, and downtown Atlanta is about 10 miles away.

Split-level and ranch-style homes with room to breathe

Wilson Mill Meadows’ ranch-style, bi-level and split-level homes line hilly streets that sometimes end in cul-de-sacs. Many of the ranch-style houses have brick exteriors, and the wood-sided split-levels are sometimes painted playful colors. With lot sizes around a quarter-acre, neighbors have a little breathing room, and yards have space for mature trees and off-street parking. Most of the houses were built in the 1970s and ‘80s, and Screws says many need renovations. Prices typically range from around $170,000 to $290,000, and some of the homes are available for rent.

C-rated public schools with lots of extracurriculars

Kids can start school at L.P. Miles Elementary and then go to Jean Childs Young Middle; both earn a C from Niche. At the C-rated Benjamin E. Mays High, students can join around 30 clubs, including the Garden Club, Future Business Leaders of America and the Blue Essence Step Team. There are also around 25 sports teams, including golf, competitive cheer and swimming.

MARTA bus stops and nearby interstates help locals get around

Interstates 285 and 20 are about 2 miles away, leading about 10 miles to downtown Atlanta. “You’re in Atlanta, so you’re going to have to drive,” Screws says. The MARTA bus stops throughout the neighborhood, and the Hamilton E. Holmes subway station is about 4 miles away. Houses of worship include New Life Christian Bible Church and Mount Gilead Mount Hermon Church of God Holiness. Grady Memorial Hospital is about 10 miles away, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is a 14-mile trip.

Sports fields, hiking, roller skating and swimming are nearby

Wilson Mill Park is the neighborhood’s only public green space, offering basketball and tennis courts, a playground, and baseball fields. Other outdoor recreation isn’t far — the Herbert Greene Nature Preserve has a 2-mile trail through old-growth forest. Cascade Skating is an indoor roller rink nearby that has themed skate nights and offers lessons. At the C.T. Martin Natatorium, which is an eight-lane indoor pool, kids can take swimming lessons year-round. Six Flags Over Georgia, an amusement park with over 40 rides and roller coasters, is about 5 miles away.

Restaurants and retailers are within a mile

A small commercial area with a gym, a beauty supply store and a nail salon is within a mile. It’s surrounded by chain restaurants like Church’s Texas Chicken and McDonald’s, but there are also a few locally owned options, like Memezz Restaurant, which serves breakfast for most of the week and soul food on Sunday afternoons. For dessert, Double Scoop Ice Cream has over 50 flavors, including dairy-free options. Nearby grocery stores include Dollar General, Wayfield and Publix. Walmart and The Home Depot are about 3 miles away.

Professional sports games are a short drive away

“If you want to go to a Falcons game, it’s right down the road,” Screws says. A 10-mile drive on I-20 takes sports fans to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United play. Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves baseball team, is a 13-mile drive north on I-285.
