Mays is a Southwest Atlanta neighborhood where you don’t have to go far for everyday essentials. It’s home to Benjamin E. Mays High School, named for the civil rights leader and former president of Morehouse College. Aside from quick drives to school, you’re just a few miles from big-box stores and popular recreation spaces, whether you want to hike past a waterfall or spend the afternoon roller skating. Several major highways are also close by, giving you straightforward routes to places like Downtown Atlanta and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Types of homes and price ranges in Mays

Mays mostly has townhouses and New Traditional single-family homes built in the early 2000s and 2020s. Even the detached homes tend to sit on smaller lots, which helps create a close-knit feel. “It’s a nice community,” says Nkosi Leary, a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices who lives in the neighborhood. “Everybody looks out for each other. It’s good to have neighbors who will do that for you.” The median sale price here is around $230,000, well below Atlanta's median of about $425,000. It’s also a little lower than what you’ll find in nearby neighborhoods like West Manor and Cascade Heights. Prices here usually range from the lower $100,000s to the mid-$300,000s, depending on the home’s age, size and condition.

Things to know about Benjamin E. Mays High School

Mays is zoned for Atlanta Public Schools, and kids can go to L.P. Miles Elementary School, Jean Childs Young Middle School and Benjamin E. Mays High School, which is recognized as an International Baccalaureate World School. Its main building is split into four learning communities focused on science, mathematics, business and leadership, which helps give the campus a college-like atmosphere.

Which interstates are nearby

Interstate 285, better known locally as the Perimeter, borders Mays and provides a direct route to destinations like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, about 12 miles south, and Sandy Springs, roughly 20 miles north. Interstate 20 is also nearby, leading right into Downtown Atlanta, which is about 9 miles away. Driving there typically takes 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. MARTA bus routes serve the area as well.

Parks, pools, and skating rinks close to Mays

Although homes here don’t have much yard space, the neighborhood has its own playground, pool and tennis courts. Several other recreation spaces are less than 5 miles away, including:

  • Cascade Springs Nature Preserve, where forested trails wind past Civil War-era earthworks, a historic springhouse and a waterfall
  • John A. White Park, which has a public nine-hole golf course, a tennis complex and a swimming pool
  • Cascade, a roller skating rink that has been around since 2000
  • C.T. Martin Natatorium and Recreation Center, where you can work out, shoot hoops and swim in one of the indoor pools

Where to run errands and go out to eat

Cascade Road is a major commercial corridor along Mays’ south side. Right next to the neighborhood, you’ll find:
