A South Florida neighborhood near the waterfront

It’s not on the beach, but Seminole Manor presents residents with a different kind of waterfront: Lake Osborne and a series of canals. This collection of subdivisions in Palm Beach County, only 5 miles from the beach, draws retirees, families and more. “Seminole Manor is like a freshwater lake that attracts many fish,” says Siobhan Gallagher, a Realtor with Douglas Elliman who has worked in the area for nearly 15 years. The mostly residential neighborhood consists of gated senior living communities, mobile home parks and midcentury subdivisions that are open to anyone. Amid these subdivisions are canals that branch off Lake Osborne, where kayakers occasionally paddle through the narrow waterways.

Senior communities and manufactured homes in Seminole Manor

In Seminole Manor’s gated senior living communities, midcentury manufactured homes surround ponds and the narrow canals that cut through the neighborhood. In the neighborhood’s non-age-restricted subdivisions, ‘70s ranch homes and mobile homes are common. A selection of condos and townhouses are scattered about as well. Two-bedroom homes can be purchased for as little as $40,000, while one of the three-bedroom waterfront homes on Lake Osborne can cost up to $850,000. Most home options are between the mid-$300,000s and the low $600,000s.

Beach and baseball in Seminole Manor

At the center of the neighborhood, Santaluces Athletic Complex hosts tournaments at its four baseball fields. While the facility is a youth sports hub, it also offers freshwater fishing, a half-mile bike path and a playground. At the adjoining aquatic complex, locals leap from diving boards and swim laps at the outdoor pool, which is typically kept between 78 and 82 degrees all year. Locals can cast lines into Lake Osborne from the bank at Melear Park in hopes of hooking a bass. From Seminole Manor, it’s a 3-mile drive to Municipal Beach Park, 750 feet of public beachfront.

Gardening expertise at the Lantana Road library

Those who want to get into gardening, or further embrace the hobby, can check out the Sustainable Gardening Group that meets at the Palm Beach County Library Lantana Road Branch. It’s one of the library’s most popular programs, says librarian Katrina Brockway. Between 50 and 100 locals often show up once a month to hear guest speakers share how they can grow their own food, while others gather for the monthly seedling exchanges. A day rarely passes without some sort of event happening at the neighborhood library, from movie nights to afterschool storytime.
