Convenience and comfort in Asheton Lakes
A subdivision built around its namesake bodies of water, Asheton Lakes sits within the outer reaches of Auburn. While the suburban neighborhood gains space to spread out, it doesn’t sacrifice convenience. Asheton Lakes sits off Highway 280, which leads towards Opelika, and downtown Auburn is just 4 miles away. “280 is right there, and North College Street is easy to reach to go downtown, but it’s super easy to get in and out of,” says Amy Cotney, Realtor at Roots Real Estate Investment Development. Highly rated schools, neighborhood amenities and larger homes set it apart from other communities in the outskirts of Auburn.

Larger new traditional homes and new farmhouses
Laid out along suburban streets that snake through the subdivision, Asheton Lakes’ homes have large front yards, often landscaped with small trees and bushes. Many have fenced-in backyards, some with private pools. While new homes are being built on the west side of the neighborhood, most went up between the mid-1990s and mid-aughts. “The homes here, we’re talking larger homes,” Cotney says. “It’s four- and five-bedrooms for the majority of them.” The area’s new traditional homes go from the low $600,000s to $900,000, most sporting stone ornamentation. Meanwhile, the new construction sells between $300,000 and $500,000, mainly in farmhouse style.

Just off Highway 280, Asheton Lakes is one of several northern subdivisions that are a bit removed from the city. In fact, the neighborhood is closer to The Bottle, an area named for the 64-foot-tall soda bottle that once stood at the intersection of 280 and College Street. Billed as the tallest soda bottle in the world, the structure was home to a service station and an apartment, and it was visited by dignitaries such as President Franklin Roosevelt. The landmark burned down in 1936, but Alabama maps still call the area The Bottle. Highway 280 also leads southeast to Interstate 85, one of the main corridors through east Alabama. Montgomery is 60 miles west on I-85, while Atlanta is 100 miles northeast. Most air travelers head to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which has flights to over 200 destinations around the world.
