Student housing and gameday condos
Apartment buildings and condo complexes are scattered throughout downtown Auburn, mainly as student housing. However, some condos cater toward the gameday crowd, for those diehard fans who come into town on football weekends. “There are a lot of investors that want to buy gameday homes to just use for themselves,” Fuller says. “Not just to come in for football but basketball, baseball, or just to see their kids that go to school there. But some of them buy for short-term rentals.” One-bedroom condos can go between the mid-$200,000s and $300,000s, while two- and three-bedroom units sell from the mid-$400,000s to almost $800,000.Enjoying the Auburn University campus
Students at Auburn University, many of whom live downtown, often enjoy the manicured campus by bringing a blanket to sit under the trees with friends. On weekends in the spring and the fall, Auburn’s Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball leagues descend on Felton Little Park, which has three diamonds as well as a playground.Auburn’s highly rated school system
Auburn City Schools splits downtown into three separate elementary school zones, with the majority of students starting at Dean Road Elementary School, which receives an A-plus grade from Niche. Dean Road Elementary feeds into Wrights Mill Road Elementary School for third through fifth grade, followed by J.F. Drake Middle School for sixth and East Samford School for seventh, each of which receives an A rating. Auburn Junior High School, also rated A, serves the neighborhood for eighth and ninth grade, and students head to Auburn High School for 10th through 12th grade. Niche ranks the A-rated high school as the 12th-best public high school in the state of Alabama.“War Eagle” at Jordan-Hare Stadium
The Auburn Downtown Merchants Association sponsors plenty of events throughout the year to bring residents out to the local businesses, from student and alumni events during homecoming to the annual Christmas parade. But, as in many college towns, football takes over downtown Auburn on fall weekends. Jordan-Hare Stadium, home of the Tigers, is less than half a mile from downtown, with more than 88,000 fans packing the stadium during home games.Tiger Transit for Auburn University students and staff
While most of the apartments and condos throughout downtown Auburn have large parking lots, the area is quite walkable. Many residents attend school or work at Auburn University, which sits adjacent to the neighborhood. The school runs the Tiger Transit bus system throughout Auburn and Opelika for students, staff and faculty, while those unaffiliated with the university can utilize the Dial-A-Ride service from Lee-Russell Public Transit. While a couple of regional airports are closer, residents often head to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, a 100-mile drive, for flights across the country.Toomer’s Drugstore and other iconic businesses
The iconic Toomer’s Drugstore was founded by an alum of Auburn’s first football team and has been intertwined with the Tigers ever since. “You have to go to Toomer’s Drugstore, of course, and get one of their famous lemonades,” says Lori Fuller, Realtor with eXp Realty Southern Branch. College kids and visiting families coexist downtown, with everyone frequenting the restaurants and boutiques. Hamilton’s on Magnolia is an Auburn staple with steak and seafood entrees, while Skybar Cafe is a favorite for its live music and rooftop bar. Wrapsody of Auburn, also nearby, is a popular boutique. Meanwhile, both Target and Publix opened locations in downtown in the last few years, giving students and residents easy access to groceries and other essentials.
