Older homes throughout Pine Hills
Tall evergreens line the narrow neighborhood streets and cul-de-sacs of Pine Hills. While some homes have attached garages, many only have carports. Prices range from the upper $200,000s to the low $500,000s, with the upper edge offering more square footage and recent updates. The area’s ranch and bi-level homes are generally smaller and more affordable than those in the adjacent Cary Woods neighborhood. “Cary Woods is one of Auburn’s favorite places, but Pine Hills is a little different,” Cotney says. “It’s older homes, probably talking 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. A lot of mature landscaping.”Hickory Dickory Park’s playground
Just a block north of the neighborhood, Hickory Dickory Park draws families to its nursery rhyme playground. Otherwise, residents have to drive to enjoy the outdoors. The Kreher Preserve and Nature Center is 2 miles north, featuring 6 miles of paths. For a more strenuous hike, the trails at Chewacla State Park, roughly 6 miles south, lead to a waterfall, a lake for swimming and campsites. Meanwhile, 2 miles away, the private Auburn University Club has a well-manicured golf course and a close relationship with its namesake institution. “It’s not quite as hoity-toity as the Moore’s Mill Club,” Cotney says. “It’s great if you want to play golf, and they’ve got a nice clubhouse with good food.”High marks for Auburn City Schools
As part of the Auburn City Schools district, Cary Woods Elementary receives an A-plus grade from Niche. A-rated Pick Elementary School sits just across North College Street from the neighborhood, serving third through fifth grade. Students then head to J.F. Drake Middle for sixth grade, East Samford School for seventh, and Auburn Junior High for eighth and ninth; each school receives an A. Auburn High, also rated A as the 12th-best public high school in the state, offers both Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs. Auburn University, which enrolls over 30,000 students, is about 2 miles south of the neighborhood.Cheering on the Tigers each fall
With its location close to downtown Auburn, Pine Hills is a quick trip away from city happenings. Holiday celebrations like the annual Christmas parade draw big crowds downtown. But each fall, college football takes center stage, with nearly 90,000 fans packing into Jordan-Hare Stadium to cheer on the Auburn Tigers. The community comes together for gameday traditions, including “rolling” Toomer’s Corner with toilet paper after a win.Easy access to downtown Auburn
Pine Hills is just off North College Street, offering easy commutes to Auburn University and downtown. While North College has sidewalks, unlike most of Auburn, residents generally drive the 2 miles to downtown. The main corridor through East Alabama, Interstate 85, runs south of downtown Auburn, about 5 miles from Pine Hills. Montgomery is 60 miles west, while Atlanta is 100 miles to the northeast. Residents often head to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for air travel, as its status as a Delta hub means it offers flights to over 200 destinations.Downtown Auburn’s dining options
Publix is the nearest grocery store, sitting just across University Drive about a mile away. A Wendy’s and a WNB Factory for wings and burgers occupy the shopping center as well. But for a night out, residents typically head downtown. Restaurants such as Hamilton’s on Magnolia and the Hound offer upscale menus, while Auburn Draft House has 44 beers on tap. For retail shopping, the Auburn Mall is 3 miles away, featuring a Dillard’s and a Belk along with a food court.
