Varied neighborhood north of downtown Auburn
A mile north of downtown Auburn, the varied housing styles in Shelton Park tend to have more character than nearby neighborhoods. “It’s not as old as some of the other neighborhoods over that way, like Mckinley Heights or Stage Road,” says Richard Coffin, broker, operating partner and cofounder of The Key Agency. Most homes were built in the 1980s and 1990s, and the lack of a unified design aesthetic created a more vibrant neighborhood. Highly rated schools stands out to families, while the proximity to downtown and the university attracts young professionals and graduate students.
Townhomes and single-family houses throughout Shelton Park
Residential streets branch off Shelton Mill Road, with suburban drives and cul-de-sacs laid out through the neighborhood. Home styles vary from driveway to driveway, one consequence of the area’s homes being built by different developers at different times. “It’s definitely a little more modern-looking,” Coffin says. “There are a lot of townhomes, and some smaller single family homes.” Townhouses sell between the upper $100,000s and $250,000, while brick Colonial revivals go between $200,000 and $300,000. Meanwhile, 21st-century snout houses and more unique builds sell between $300,000 and the low $400,000s.
Townhomes are a popular housing option in the neighborhood of Shelton Park.
An emerging area, most homes in Shelton Park were built in the 1980s and 1990s.

Hamilton’s on Magnolia and other favorites in downtown Auburn
A short drive down North College Street from Shelton Park, downtown Auburn has many of the city’s favorite eateries and shops. Hamilton’s on Magnolia serves American cuisine in a warm, wood-paneled setting, while college kids and local residents alike head to bars like Southeastern. On the other side of the neighborhood, Tiger on the Green offers a unique experience with bar food and “lawngolf,” which utilizes a pickleball rather than a traditional golf ball. “It’s very popular. I’ve eaten there once,” Coffin says. “It’s almost like they chip up onto the green, really the whole game is to chip and to putt.” The Auburn Mall is a little over a mile away, with stores such as Belk and Dillards, while a Walmart Neighborhood Market sits across the street from the mall for groceries.

Tigers football each fall at Jordan-Hare Stadium
Downtown Auburn offers plenty of community events, from outdoor festivals to holiday celebrations like the annual Christmas parade. But — as in many Southern college towns — Saturdays in the fall are sacred, set aside for college football. The Auburn Tigers play at Jordan-Hare Stadium on the university campus in front of nearly 90,000 fans, while plenty more participate in tailgating festivities. And after a Tigers win, students and members of the community “roll” Toomer’s Corner: covering the oaks at the entrance to Auburn’s campus, and anything else within throwing distance, in toilet paper.
Shelton Park residents are very proud of the local team, the Auburn Tigers.
