Hiking and camping at Chewacla State Park

On the southern outskirts of Auburn, Wrights Mill Estates offers nearby access to several of the area’s best parks. The closest — and most prominent — is Chewacla State Park, one mile down Wrights Mill Road. The nearly 700-acre park offers hiking and biking trails, all centered on a 26-acre lake and waterfall. The waterfall descends into Moores Mill Creek, where visitors climb rocks and swim when the weather is warm. The Lake Wilmore Trail also sits a mile from the neighborhood, with paths along its namesake body of water. Just across I-85, Town Creek Park is roughly 2 miles away and has walking paths as well as a new inclusive playground. Golfers have plenty of choices throughout Auburn, including the nearby Moore’s Mill Club. The private country club has a golf course and practice facilities, plus a pool and fitness center for its members.

Homes on large lots in southeast Auburn

Wrights Mill Estates was mainly built in the late 1980s and early 1990s with wide neighborhood streets that branch off into cul-de-sacs. Unlike many similar neighborhoods, it has no HOA. “It’s rare to see that, on that side of town and for a neighborhood of that age,” Bass says. “A lot of people tend to like that aspect of it.” Its location away from downtown Auburn allows for greater privacy, as homes are built on larger lots than many closer to the center of town. Mature trees canopy the area, adding to the quiet character. Large new traditional and ranch-style homes on plots as big as 3 acres can go between $500,000 and $900,000, while more modest colonial-influenced builds sell from the mid-$300,000s to $500,000. Wrights Mill Estates has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
