Cozy neighborhood near Worcester
Cozy Cape Cod and Colonial Revival houses line Stoneville’s shady roads. This quaint Auburn, Massachusetts, neighborhood is 5 miles south of Worcester, where there are 12 colleges and universities, growing biotechnical and healthcare industries and an expansive dining scene. But despite the busy urban activity a roughly 15-minute drive north, Stoneville residents get a sense of seclusion in this bedroom community, with everyday amenities and scenic outdoor spaces close to home. “It’s a lot of country just outside a lot of city,” says Realtor Kerryann Murphy with Lamacchia Realty, who has experience selling throughout Central Massachusetts. “It feels a little removed from Worcester.”
Homes in classic New England styles
The residential streets of Stoneville are lined with mature pine, oak and maple trees. Two-lane roads are typically cracked and unmarked, and drivers may see Stoneville Reservoir or other small brooks along roadsides. Lots are typically spacious and grassy, with enough room for a backyard barbecue or front-yard soccer game. Modest Cape Cods and bungalows can sell for $250,000 to $500,000, while larger Colonial Revivals or ranch-style homes with modern interiors can run in the $500,000 to $820,000 range. However, prices are more contingent on a property’s size, age and condition than its architectural style.
Relaxing by Stoneville Reservoir and Auburn recreation centers
Rotary Beach Recreation Park sits on the shores of Stoneville Reservoir. Visitors can sunbathe, fish or swim along the sandy banks. On the neighborhood’s southern side, the Auburn Recreation Complex is often frequented by families on the weekend. Outside, kids run around the playground in the summer or glide down sledding hills in the winter. Hockey teams compete on the indoor ice rinks, and dogs play at the adjacent Town of Auburn Dog Park. The nearby 20-acre Dr. Arthur and Dr. Martha Pappas Recreation Complex has several sports fields and an open-air performance venue. From June to August, residents bring lawn chairs and blankets, ready to listen to live music during the Summer in the Park Concert Series. The Auburn Farmers and Cultural Market, where vendors sell artisan goods and local produce, is sometimes held at the same time as the concert series. Starting behind the rec center, the Pakachoag Hiking Trail runs for nearly 2 miles. This secluded path weaves through the forest, over a wooden footbridge and across a scenic meadow.
Advanced Placement classes at Auburn High
Auburn Public Schools serve Stoneville. Bryn Mawr Elementary School educates kindergarteners to second graders and gets a B-plus from Niche. For third to fifth grade, students can attend Swanson Road Intermediate School before moving to Auburn Middle and Auburn High. These three schools get B’s from Niche. The only public high school in the area, Auburn High offers nearly 20 Advanced Placement classes.
Well-known retailers at Auburn Mall, dining in nearby Worcester
Between Interstate 290 and Interstate 90, the Auburn Mall is an enclosed shopping center with a range of retailers. Anchored by Macy’s, the mall has stores like American Eagle, Bath & Body Works and Victoria’s Secret. Various restaurants are within and around the mall, from Starbucks to Outback Steakhouse, and a Shaw’s grocery store is up the road. There are also a few go-to local restaurants in the Auburn area. Bentley Pub, a wooden red restaurant that serves hearty portions of American fare, is on Southbridge Street, while Tiny Tim’s Café on Washington Street is popular for pancake breakfasts and lunchtime sandwiches. For a broader selection, nearby Worcester has a diverse dining scene, particularly in the city’s Shrewsbury Street area.
5 miles to Worcester, 50 miles to Boston
Stoneville is a car-dependent neighborhood. “Most residents are commuting for work,” Murphy says. Interstates 290 and 90 – or the “Mass Pike,” as locals call it – are nearby. I-290 leads about 5 miles north to Worcester, while I-90 leads about 50 miles east to Boston. Worcester Regional Transit Authority buses run along Oxford and Auburn streets, leading to Worcester, where Union Station offers a daily commuter rail service to the state’s capital. For air travel, the Worcester Regional Airport, with limited domestic flights, is about 5 miles away, and the Boston Logan International Airport is about 50 miles east.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
