While plenty of people work in Auburn, the area is popular with people working in Seattle or Tacoma. “It’s centrally located especially with people wanting to live close to Seattle without paying higher prices,” says Broker Amanda Mannila with John L. Scott Real Estate. Further, Auburn is growing, with more development happening downtown, so residents can expect more businesses and restaurants to pop up just minutes from their homes.

Main Street Auburn's restaurants and craft stores

Residents living in Downtown Auburn can benefit from being only minutes from the city’s shops and restaurants. At Oddfellas Pub and Eatery, residents can try their specialty burger — a German-themed item with sliced sausage fit between a pretzel bun. Chaska Bar and Grill is an Indian restaurant that offers weekly specials highlighting a new entrée. Their bar also has specialty cocktails, like their spiced chai-tini. Avid crafters can head to A Little Knitty — a local yarn store.
For groceries, there’s a Fred Meyer off Auburn Way North and a Walmart Supercenter along Washington Route 18.

Auburn community resources and nearby national parks

Les Gove Park is 20 acres of green and recreational space, offering essential services like the city’s community center, library and senior center all in one place. Kids can play on the playground or the splash pad in summer. People can stroll along the walking path lined with outdoor fitness equipment. The bocce courts host a local club that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At Auburn Environmental Park (AEP), people can explore the 250 acres of protected wetlands and marshes through boardwalk trails. There are even picnic tables and benches along the boardwalk to encourage people to just stop and take in the wildlife. Residents love to get outside in Auburn and around, and it’s a big part of their culture. “We’re surrounded by water, so you can hike year-round,” Manilla says. “Of course, in the winter, there’s skiing. There’s lots of hiking around, and Mount Rainier you can make into a day trip.”

Auburn Farmers Market in Les Gove Park

From June to September, Les Gove Park hosts the Auburn Farmers Market, where residents can explore the produce and prepared goods from local vendors. There is also usually some form of entertainment, like live music or gardening and cooking demonstrations. In the winter, Auburn’s Lighted Santa Parade and Tree Lighting features trucks decked to the halls with holiday lights. Because Auburn is so close to Seattle, Mannila also shares that people will head into the city for festivals and concerts. “If it’s not a heavy traffic time, it’s pretty darn easy to get into the city,” she says.

Auburn High School is at the heart of downtown

Students in Auburn can attend Terminal Park Elementary School, which Niche grants a B and lists as the 31st most diverse public elementary school in Washington. With a C-plus from Niche, Cascade Middle School is the state's 12th most diverse public middle school. Niche awards Auburn High School a B, and the school offers unique clubs to match student interests, from film and guitar to sports medicine and jewelry design. “The high school is right in the middle of the downtown residential area, and there’s always kids around,” Mannila says.

Train and Interstate commute options for Downtown Auburn residents

When getting around Downtown Auburn, residents can hop on one of the buses. The city is also very walkable. “There’s a few different trails that go through the entire area,” Mannila says. C Street connects residents with parks and amenities to the north, but Main Street links people to the train station. Auburn Station services the S line, which runs between Seattle and Tacoma. Those who prefer to drive can take the I-5 14 miles to Tacoma and 28 miles to Seattle. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is 17 miles from Downtown Auburn. The nearest hospital, Auburn Regional Medical Plaza, is located within the downtown area.
