Rural residential area surrounded by nature
Newaukum’s thick forests and rolling farmlands sit between Auburn in the north and Enumclaw in the south, with roaring rivers on each side. The rural area is interspersed with residential properties and incorporates part of the Muckleshoot Reservation, which is home to over 3,100 Muckleshoot Indian Tribe members. “It’s a small community, but we’re surrounded by loads of natural beauty,” says Julie Lim, manager for the Muckleshoot Public Library. While the landscape creates a sense of seclusion, opportunities for shopping and dining are only 8 miles away in nearby cities.

Newaukum’s single-family homes and working farms
Homes in Newaukum are dotted along narrow country roads and come with a lot of land. Sprawling ranchers and bi-levels built in the 1960s and 1970s are common. These houses span 2,000 to 3,800 square feet and cost $675,000 to $850,0000. There are also traditional farmhouses with front porches found throughout the neighborhood. Some were constructed as early as the 1910s, while others are newer and built in the 1980s. Prices range from $650,000 to $1.6 million, depending on property acreage and condition. Many of these properties operate as working farms, with additional buildings that house horses and chickens.

Recreation on the rivers and lakes of King County
Newaukum’s surrounding landscape contains many opportunities for outdoor recreation. “We’re on the Cascade Mountain range, so skiing and hiking are very important to the people here,” Lim says. “There are also a lot of lakes in the area, so boating is important too.” The Green River Natural Area is 1,140 acres of open land north of the neighborhood, with miles of multi-use trails that wind through cottonwood trees along the riverbanks. Fishing, kayaking and canoeing are allowed on the river.
About 10 miles west of the neighborhood is Lake Tapps. Lake Tapps Park has a sandy beach area for swimming and sunbathing, and a boat launch for water recreation. There are also picnic benches and grills spread out on a grassy field by the water. Tapps Island Golf Course is a public 9-hole course located on the lake’s largest island.

Events and attractions on the Muckleshoot Reservation
Within the Muckleshoot Reservation are a handful of outdoor entertainment venues. The White River Amphitheater hosts live music concerts during the summer months and even holds music festivals like the Vans Warped Tour. “Those concerts go all summer long. Since it’s an open amphitheater though, it’s only during nice weather. And it rains here a lot,” Lim says. There’s also the Muckleshoot Pow Wow Grounds, which hosts annual cultural celebrations that have traditional dance performances and drumming contests. About 5 miles north of the neighborhood is the Muckleshoot Casino Resort.
