In East Aurora, Tollgate Overlook is a quiet neighborhood known for its affordability and proximity to Buckley Space Force Base, one of the area’s biggest employers. Parks, greenways and a lack of through traffic give the community a laid-back feel, with shopping centers nearby along Buckley Road and in Aurora Highlands
Tollgate Overlook has a mix of single-family and multi-family options. Colonial Revivals, bungalows and ranch-style homes date back to the late 1970s and early 80s, while newer developments feature modern craftsman architecture. "The closer to the mountains you get, the more expensive the houses are, so Tollgate Overlook is one of the more affordable neighborhoods of Aurora," says Gregory Livingston, a Realtor at Keller Williams Realty who has been selling homes in the area for over 20 years.
Single-family homes start in the low $400,000s and reach the upper $600,000s, while condos and townhouses range from the low $100,000s to the mid-$400,000s. While the neighborhood does not have a homeowners association, some multi-family complexes charge monthly dues. Robinwood Condominiums has a monthly fee of around $450, while Windcreek Condos charges around $300 a month.
Most local families are served by Aurora Public Schools, with nearby schools including Arkansas Elementary and Mrachek Middle School. Gateway High School has a variety of career and technical education courses, from health science to digital photography. The neighborhood is home to Vanguard Classical School, a tuition-free charter school that serves kindergarten through 12th-grade students and has curriculum focused on logic, grammar and rhetoric.
Parks and recreation areas can be found throughout the neighborhood and in surrounding communities like Centre Point and Aurora Highlands. Mountain View Park has a playground, paved walking trails and baseball diamonds that play host to Arapahoe Little League practices and tournaments. Nearby, the 25-acre CentrePointe Park has trails, a playground and shaded picnic tables, while Highland Hollows Park has basketball and tennis courts.
There are multiple shopping centers on the east side of the neighborhood along Buckley Road. Chain restaurants and a Safeway can be found at the intersection of Mississippi Avenue. Senor Miguels serves up classic Mexican fare, and Lotus Asian Market sells snacks, produce and essentials. Launch Pad Brewery is a local favorite with over 30 craft beers on tap and different food trucks parked outside every day. The brewery also hosts weekly trivia nights and happy hour specials. For more shopping, Town Center at Aurora is around 3 miles west.
Those working in downtown Denver can expect to commute to work in 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Bus lines operated by the Regional Transportation District run along the Buckley Road and Kentucky Ave, which intersects Tollgate Overlook. Being just 20 miles south of the Denver International Airport, it's easy to get everywhere within a short drive, including the many hospitals, golf courses and entertainment options of Aurora.
Buckley Space Force Base is less than 2 miles from Tollgate Overlook and employs over 15,000 people. "There is easy access to the base and many hospitals in the area,” says Livingston. “Military personnel are moving there, but so are doctors and medical specialists," UCHealth is another major employer, around 6 miles northwest. “A lot of people don’t realize it, but Aurora has a lot of jobs in tech and defense,” says Caleb Pence, an Aurora managing broker with Black Crown Real Estate. “The base has a lot of military jobs, but they hire a lot of tech contractors from Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and similar companies.”
