Active commuity 40 miles west of Chicago

Aurora was one of the first cities in the country to install an electric street light system, giving it the nickname “City of Lights.” There was bound to be a neighborhood with a name nodding to this heritage – and Light of the Community fits that bill. It sits about two miles from downtown Aurora, with the banks of the Fox River situated on the west end. There are several resident-based organizations that take pride in this being one of Aurora’s oldest neighborhoods, so it can certainly be said to feature an active community. But, of course, people like the area for its modern aspects, too. “Aurora Outlet is considered a popular place to shop,” says Realtor Brandon Rodriguez with Corona Homes Team, speaking of a core retail hub at the intersection of New York Street and Farnsworth Avenue. “It’s part of the area’s larger reputation for having plenty of places where you can go out and be active.”

Modest midcentury styles, with period details or renovated interiors

Midcentury bungalows and ranch-style homes are commonly seen, but there are two-story dwellings as well. Individual residences sit on single lots and come equipped with tidy lawns, personal driveways and car garages. Homes are placed on lots that are sparsely decorated with shrub, although tall mature trees are interspersed. Many of these residences attach to a sidewalk that passes out front, while driveways lead to a garage that’s recessed on the lot. The interiors of some of these homes are renovated to the degree that they’re indistinguishable from 2020s-era construction: sleek vinyl floors, new lighting fixtures and a modern kitchen. Meanwhile, others preserve period details, like wood paneled walls. Prices range from $140,000 to $300,000.

Space to roam in MLK Jr. Park

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park is one of the larger green spaces in the community, connected by trails to the Oakhurst Forest Preserve. This 20-acre recreational spot has baseball and basketball courts, serene lake views, a mulched play area and pedestrian paths. There’s also a sheltered picnic pavilion suited for gatherings with family and friends. When the weather is warm, kids can cool off on the splash pad. Plus, parks offer a way to get in touch with neighbors. “We host many community-centered events such as National Night Out,” says Tim Wagner with the Fox Valley Park District media relations team. Other outdoor recreational areas include Cowherd Park, Marie Wilkinson Park and Falkos Park.
