Light of the Community
Neighborhood in Aurora, Illinois
Kane County 60502, 60505
Modest midcentury styles, with period details or renovated interiors
Midcentury bungalows and ranch-style homes are commonly seen, but there are two-story dwellings as well. Individual residences sit on single lots and come equipped with tidy lawns, personal driveways and car garages. Homes are placed on lots that are sparsely decorated with shrub, although tall mature trees are interspersed. Many of these residences attach to a sidewalk that passes out front, while driveways lead to a garage that’s recessed on the lot. The interiors of some of these homes are renovated to the degree that they’re indistinguishable from 2020s-era construction: sleek vinyl floors, new lighting fixtures and a modern kitchen. Meanwhile, others preserve period details, like wood paneled walls. Prices range from $140,000 to $300,000.Space to roam in MLK Jr. Park
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park is one of the larger green spaces in the community, connected by trails to the Oakhurst Forest Preserve. This 20-acre recreational spot has baseball and basketball courts, serene lake views, a mulched play area and pedestrian paths. There’s also a sheltered picnic pavilion suited for gatherings with family and friends. When the weather is warm, kids can cool off on the splash pad. Plus, parks offer a way to get in touch with neighbors. “We host many community-centered events such as National Night Out,” says Tim Wagner with the Fox Valley Park District media relations team. Other outdoor recreational areas include Cowherd Park, Marie Wilkinson Park and Falkos Park.Creative extracurriculars at Cowherd Middle
Oak Park Elementary is situated in a stately red brick building, and maintains a 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio. It earns a C-minus rating from Niche. Cowherd Middle earns the same, and features unique extracurriculars like Lego Club and Fix It Club, where students learn how to de-stress. It has its own unique façade, with a large arching main building capped by a bright blue roof. East Aurora High earns a C, and is decked out with chrome and large windows. It has a reputation for promoting a strong Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program.Buses on Farnsworth Avenue
Buses run along Farnsworth Avenue and New York Street – two major thoroughfares that intersect near the south side. Residential areas are walkable, too, thanks to sidewalks. Highway 25 is a mile west of the neighborhood, as is the downtown Aurora Metra station. The highway will quickly take commuters to Interstate 88, and then it’s roughly a 40-mile drive to downtown Chicago.Ice cream and sandwiches at Deri Delite
Most eateries will be found along or near New York Street, which cuts east-west across the length of the neighborhood. Everything from fast food chains to locally owned restaurants are located here. There are casual spots like Deri Delite, which features ice cream as well as entrees like a fish filet sandwich. Assorted pizza places and taquerias offer an easy go-to for dinner. For the adventurous, fine dining can be found in downtown Aurora along South Broadway and South Lake Street. Neighborhood grocers like Supermercado Casa Blanca and El Paso Grande provide organic produce and spices. Aurora Outlet and Fox Valley Flea Market are open-air retailers that sell pre-loved and unique finds as well as artisan crafts and trinkets. Name brands can be found at Fox Valley Mall, which has flagship stores such as Macy’s and Express.
