Near Eastside Historic District
The City of Aurora designated a portion of the neighborhood going south from the corner of South Fourth Street and Galena Boulevard as the start of the Near Eastside Historic District. Nearly 20 historic buildings have been preserved, including an 1854 Greek Revival house owned by Doctor George Buck, an early settler of the city and owned the first drug store in Aurora. The Trask House is a Queen Anne built in 1887 where a prominent jeweler lived. Fire destroyed one of the buildings in this historic section in 2019. Jesse Torres Boxing Club
Copley Park has playground equipment and a large parking area in the neighborhood's northern section. The park is known for its facility on the west side. Jesse Torres Boxing Club is an indoor gym where kids can sign up for boxing lessons. “We have kids who grew up walking to our facility, went through the program and are now professional boxers,” says Raphael Martinez, a Fox Valley Park District recreation supervisor with a particular concentration at the center. “This gym is now their training center. Those same kids are now grown up, inspire the kids, volunteer their time and give back to the same program that shaped them.” For recreation that’s not as physical, McCarty Park is Aurora’s first park and has an interactive fountain at the park’s center that’s open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
