Near Eastside Historic District
The City of Aurora designated a portion of the neighborhood going south from the corner of South Fourth Street and Galena Boulevard as the start of the Near Eastside Historic District. Nearly 20 historic buildings have been preserved, including an 1854 Greek Revival house owned by Doctor George Buck, an early settler of the city and owned the first drug store in Aurora. The Trask House is a Queen Anne built in 1887 where a prominent jeweler lived. Fire destroyed one of the buildings in this historic section in 2019. The Masonic Temple that used to stand on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Benton Street was on the National Register of Historic Places.East Aurora schools
Public school options include W.S. Beaupre Elementary, which serves students through fifth grade. Niche grades the school C-minus. It’s part of the East Aurora School District 131. Cowherd Middle School has two computer labs, two gyms and a fitness room. This school also gets a C-minus overall grade. East Aurora High School has a Niche grade of C overall but does get a B-plus for the school’s clubs and activities.McCarty Burlington houses that have been renovated
The homes not part of the historic district mostly date to the early 1900s, and some have been renovated. Chicago bungalows, Cape Cod, and workers' cottages have been given a facelift within the past ten years and are between $150,000 and $250,000. They have detached garages, which are standard in older homes, and have up to four bedrooms and nearly 2,000 square feet. Some older homes are still in their original form and are in good shape, ranging from $250,000 to $350,000. Older houses have also been turned into condos with lower-level and upper-level units. It’s an even 50/50 split for renters and homeowners in McCarty Burlington.A taste of Puerto Rico in the Chicago suburbs
Many of the restaurants reflect the neighborhood's Latino influence, including Boriken, which serves authentic Puerto Rican dishes. The specialty here is the Jibarito, a sandwich made with fried plantains instead of bread. It includes meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato. Panchos on New York Street is a favorite Mexican spot that opened in 1988. The décor on the wall is filled with historic photographs and Mexican art. There’s also a wall of dollar bills representing different currencies. It started with the first dollar the restaurant received and escalated from there. Supermercados El Guero is a Mexican-based grocery store with a small taqueria inside.Close to Phillips Park Zoo
Just south of the McCarty Burlington neighborhood is the Phillips Park Zoo, which has been part of the community for over 100 years. Most of the animals are native birds and reptiles, but there are also gray wolves, lynx and farm animals. Admission to the zoo is free.Jesse Torres Boxing Club
Copley Park has playground equipment and a large parking area in the neighborhood's northern section. The park is known for its facility on the west side. Jesse Torres Boxing Club is an indoor gym where kids can sign up for boxing lessons. “We have kids who grew up walking to our facility, went through the program and are now professional boxers,” says Raphael Martinez, a Fox Valley Park District recreation supervisor with a particular concentration at the center. “This gym is now their training center. Those same kids are now grown up, inspire the kids, volunteer their time and give back to the same program that shaped them.” For recreation that’s not as physical, McCarty Park is Aurora’s first park and has an interactive fountain at the park’s center that’s open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
