Suburban Neighborhood in Aurora, Illinois

Recreation by, along and in the middle of the river
As expected, there are plenty of recreational opportunities, with the Fox River being so close. The Fox River Trail was built on an old railroad line and follows the waterway. In addition to getting exercise on the trail, there are wildlife-watching opportunities, and the trail goes by other recreational amenities along the way. One of those is South River Street Park. The Fox River Trail goes by this park and intersects with the Virgil Gilman Nature Trail, which is almost 23 miles long and crosses the Fox River into the east part of Aurora. It’s another trail popular among bikers, walkers and nature lovers. Other park features include baseball diamonds, plenty of parking and boat launch sites. North on the trail leads across the river on a pedestrian bridge to Hurds Island, which also features an underpass beneath a railroad track. The island has a large green space for a football or soccer match.Recreation not by the water
Copley I Park is the trailhead for the Virgil Gilman Nature Trail, and there’s also a lighted baseball diamond, a half basketball court, a picnic area and a playground. Westwood Park has a playground and two full basketball courts off Jericho Road. Limited parking spaces along Jericho Road can be used to access this park. Aurora Country Club is close and is a private facility that opened in 1914. Members can enjoy a clubhouse with three dining rooms inside and a swimming pool and tennis courts outside.Older houses
Some houses are over 100 years old and date to the early 20th century. Cape Cod, Foursquare, ranch-style and bungalows range from $150,000 to $300,000. Four bedrooms and about 2,000 square feet are at the higher end for the older models. It’s just over $200 per square foot in this part of the city, and 61% of the people living in South End are homeowners. The area is relatively safe, with a 4 CAP crime score at the national average.Authentic Mexican food
The choices for eating out include a heavy dose of Hispanic influence. “That’s definitely one of the things that I appreciate about this area,” says Gavin Carlson, Education Specialist and Preparator at nearby Aurora University. “The food is delicious. It’s authentic Mexican. When I was a student at AU, I went to get tacos and other Mexican dishes every week.” El Festin means ‘the feast,’ and that’s what’s offered inside this casual Mexican eatery. Desserts also have a Mexican flavor at La Michoacana Ice Cream, where they also have a gansito, a Mexican snack cake. For a local touch to the grocery run, Prisco’s Family Market has been in the Aurora area for almost 100 years.Industrial area
The railroad tracks run through the neighborhood, and some industrial businesses, including a steel distributor and a commercial building materials company, are located along the path of the tracks. While not industrial, some people in the area could be employed by Hollywood Casino Aurora, located only a few miles to the north in downtown. It’s a large employer with over 1,000 slot machines and dining and entertainment options.West Aurora schools
Public K-12 students can attend schools in Aurora West Unified School District 129, including the B-minus-rated Freeman Elementary, with a student-teacher ratio of 16-to-1. Gladstone Avenue, Prairie Street and Terry Avenue are major streets where customers can hop on. Although very few sidewalks are along neighborhood streets, the neighborhood gets decent walk and bike scores for the number of trails in the area.
