A university nestled within a residential community
On the western side of Aurora, University Neighbors initially looks like a standard suburb but has a university hidden at the center. The neighborhood fully encompasses Aurora University, a private college originally founded in the city in 1912. Still, the streets surrounding the school have a classic suburban feel rather than a college town, with tree-lined streets and neighbors out walking their dogs. “Aurora is a big city, but this has a small-town feel,” says broker Dave Richert with Exp Realty, and resident of University Neighbors for about 50 years. “Everybody knows each other and shops at the same grocery stores. You’ll see each other out on walks. Lots of generations of families have grown up and lived here and continue to live here.”

University Neighbors' mix of home styles
Throughout University Neighbors, homes are predominately Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and American Foursquares, but interested homebuyers can find a variety of other architectural styles in the mix. “This neighborhood has a different feel because there’s not anything cookie-cutter,” Richert says. “There’s no new construction—every home was designed by an architect and built by a builder.” Young and mature trees shade the sidewalks, dropping their leaves in the fall as students return to campus. With about 6,000 students enrolled at the school, only a few hundred live in on-campus housing. The rest commute or live in the neighborhood. There are few rentals available in the community but 86% of the homes are owner-occupied. Home prices generally range between $200,000 and $500,000.

Public Native American art exhibits at Aurora University
On the southern side of the University Neighbors, Aurora Country Club’s sprawling green gives golfers a spot to perfect their swing, with four different sets of tees along the course. The grounds also offer swimming, tennis and dining facilities and host Aurora University athletics during the season. At Abraham Lincoln Park, groups can score hoops on the basketball courts, and kids can get their energy out on the playground. The dog park here provides a space for furry friends, with separate spaces for small and bigger breeds. On Aurora University’s Campus, the Schingoethe Center is free to the public, with collections dedicated to Native American art and culture. “We have two shows every year with an upcoming show featuring Native American art, and most recently, a photography exhibit titled ‘No Place Like Home,’ where 37 artists showcased their interpretation of what home is to them,” says Education Specialist and Preparator Gavin Carlson at Aurora University.

Also over here is a Prisco’s Family Market, for convenient groceries within walking distance of some homes. Its menu spices up classic pancake and waffle dishes with different topping combinations, like Heath and banana or raspberry mascarpone. Also down this thoroughfare are two other grocery options, with Jewel-Osco 1.5 miles away and Aldi 3 miles from University Neighbors. Close to downtown, the neighborhood enjoys easy access to the city’s cultural and social attractions. “The Paramount Theatre has Broadway shows,” Richert says. “My wife and I have been ticket holders for the past 20 years. We go, we see a Broadway show, and we’re home in five minutes.” Aurora Farmers Market sets up shop in downtown Aurora every Saturday morning from June to October. Live music from local bands plays while visitors peruse local produce and baked goods. The city kicks off the Fourth of July festivities with a parade in the morning, and in the evening, residents can choose from one of three different fireworks shows at various downtown parks. Shuttles are also available to bring people to different locations.

Light traffic for University Neighbors residents
While there are some buses along Galena Boulevard connecting to restaurants and grocery stores, most residents here depend on their cars to get around, but most don’t seem to mind. “We never have to deal with traffic,” Richert says. “As long as you stay away from Orchard Road, everything you need is a very short drive, just five minutes away.” To the north of the community, Galena Boulevard will be the main thoroughfare, linking residents with downtown Aurora, 2 miles away. About 2.5 miles away on the other side of the Fox River, the Aurora Metra station links commuters with downtown Chicago, 45 miles away, though they can also take Interstate 88 just north of Aurora. Ascension Mercy Hospital is the nearest medical center, 3.5 miles to the north. When traveling beyond Chicagoland, Chicago Midway International Airport is 41.5 miles away along Interstate 55.
