Aurora is residential suburb with top schools, but it also has a cheesy history
In 1904, Aurora was considered one of the biggest cheese producers in the country. The suburban city 30 miles southeast of Cleveland has since traded its cheese factories for the forests, lakes and golf courses it has today. The Aurora Farms Premium Outlet Mall works with the local golf courses and parks to create a thriving residential community. Above all these perks, the city has the best-rated public schools in Portage County.
Aurora is a small town with many convenient amenities, quaint restaurants and quality schools.

Houses by the golf course
Aurora's residential streets spread out from downtown, with some communities, such as Aurora Shores, encircling the local lakes. Single-family homes with three to four bedrooms sit atop green lawns between 1 and 4 acres. "There's a lot of luxury homes, but those are only part of the market," says Howard Hanna Realtor Susan White. "Aurora has a range of sizes and prices everywhere." Colonial Revivals and ranch-style houses from the 1960s cost between $130,000 and $500,000, while newer builds sell for between $500,000 and $700,000. "There's a couple of neighborhoods surrounding the local golf courses, too," says White. "The Barrington Golf Community is a great place to live." These homes are at the upper end of the market, as big as 10,000 square feet and costing as much as $1.9 million.

Aurora City Schools are top-rated
Local students rely on the Aurora City School District for a complete education. "The school district is superb. It's probably the biggest draw," says Realtor and resident Lori DiCesare. Students start their elementary education at Miller Elementary School for kindergarten before joining Craddock Elementary School for first and second grade. Both schools get a B-plus from Niche. Leighton Elementary School is the next step before going to Harmon Middle School. Aurora High School is next door and has extensive sports programs that include football, tennis and lacrosse. Niche gives all three schools an A and rates them as the best public schools in Portage County.

Aurora has two golf courses
The city's parks provide everything from lakeshore baseball fields to nature preserves and golf courses. Aurora's golf courses are another magnet for home buyers because of their accessibility and amenities. Barrington Golf Course is the more popular of the two. Designed by Golf star Jack Nicklaus, the course has 18 holes, a clubhouse with a swimming facility and six tennis courts. There's also the Walden Golf Course and country club in the east. "It's real picturesque," says White. "It feels like you're on vacation when you're there." Aurora Sunny Lake Park is a multi-use green space cradling Sunny Lake to the southeast. This park features trails, playgrounds, baseball fields and two large pavilions paired with picnic tables and grills. Tinkers Creek State Nature Preserve offers hiking trails and an archery range. The Bicentennial Park is the city's go-to event location. Events include the Fourth of July Festival and the holiday tree-lighting.

Olchefski’s has award-winning barbeque
Most of Aurora's local shops and restaurants are within a mile of downtown. Olchefski's BBQ serves smoked meats from an old Amish shack with instruments and road signs suspended from the ceiling. Since opening in 2017, the restaurant has won cleveland.com's Best Barbeque Contest twice. Heinen's Grocery Store is downtown, and Aurora Farms Premium Outlets on South Chillicothe Road provides clothing stores, such as Calvin Klein. The closest traditional mall is Beechwood Place, a 20-mile drive northeast. Beck's Farm and Market is on the east edge of town and offers locally sourced goods every day of the week.

Everyone gets involved in the Fourth of July parade
Aurora holds several events throughout the year. "There's a big Fourth of July Parade every year that everyone in town goes to," says a local Realtor and long-time resident Kathleen Novak. "It seems like much of the town is in the parade, and the rest are watching it." After that, there's a festival with food trucks and games wrapped up with fireworks. Other events include a holiday tree lighting, a Memorial Day parade and a kids' fishing contest called The Youth Fishing Derby.

The three roads of Aurora
Chillicothe Road, Garfield Road and Aurora Road are the city's three main thoroughfares. While the first two roads intersect, Aurora Road comes from the northwest and connects with both to form a triangle downtown. The nearest highway options are a mile south of town with the ramps for the Ohio Turnpike and Interstate 480.
