Apache Shores puts you on the precipice of Lake Austin

If you’re out and about in northwest Austin, you just might spot someone sporting a T-shirt or a hat emblazoned with the words “Apache Shores.” It’s a sign of the immense pride residents have in this waterside community, so much that they have their own merch. The neighborhood includes a diverse array of homes for a range of budgets, and some sit right on Lake Austin. Apache Shores also has its own community parks, a hiking trail, a disc golf course and a private boat ramp. Restaurants and grocery stores are available just outside the neighborhood on North FM 620, and the area is part of a highly rated public school system.

Why Apache Shores feels unique among Austin neighborhoods

The namesake Apache Shores subdivision isn’t your typical master-planned development, full of similarly styled homes built around the same time. The community dates to the late 1960s, and you can find properties here built from that time period through recent years. “It’s just very unique,” says local Realtor Simone Gonzalez, who’s with JPAR Real Estate and is an Apache Shores resident. “Apache Shores is broken up into seven sections, and each section has its own beauty. There are million-dollar homes and then there are $300,000 homes. You have a really wide variety of people, and almost no two homes look alike.” Apache Shores has everything from late-century cottages to 2020s contemporary-style houses. The pricier homes are perched along the shores of Lake Austin and come with their own docks. “It’s super friendly,” Gonzalez says of Apache Shores’ atmosphere. “Even though we don’t have sidewalks, we’re considered a master-planned community. So there are lots of people on golf carts, their e-bikes. People waving. Lots of people have boats.”

Nearby subdivisions like Cardinal Hills Estates and Mountain View add to the area’s eclectic housing variety. Homes across this pocket of Austin typically sell for prices anywhere from the lower $300,000s to around $2 million, with square footage and proximity to the lake among the major factors. The neighborhood’s median sale price of about $540,000 is less than the citywide median of roughly $550,000. Property owners association fees are usually less than $15 per month, where applicable.

Local school district includes nearby elementary and middle schools

The highly rated Lake Travis Independent School District serves this area. Students in Apache Shores are particularly close to the system’s Lake Travis Elementary School and Hudson Bend Middle School, and both offer after-school programming. That includes extended care at Lake Travis Elementary and interscholastic athletics teams at Hudson Bend Middle. School choice options in the Lake Travis ISD are limited to approved transfer requests. Both in-district and out-of-district transfers are evaluated individually based on capacity, program needs, and discipline history, with approval contingent on space rather than a lottery.

Outdoor recreation opportunities are built into Apache Shores

Access to Lake Austin is the No. 1 attraction to Apache Shores, Gonzalez says. “The lake, by far, is where everybody goes to hang out,” Gonzalez says. “For anybody who moves to the neighborhood, we always say, ‘If you want to make friends, go down to the lake and that’s where you’ll meet all your neighbors.’” All residents within the Apache Shores subdivision have access to the development’s Lakeside Park, which provides almost 4 acres of space along the Lake Austin shore. Residents can also opt for membership in the neighborhood’s Club Apache, which comes with access to a private boat ramp, a pool, and tennis and basketball courts. Other community amenities available to Apache Shores residents include:

  • The Geronimo Children’s Park, where there’s a covered playground area
  • A roughly half-mile hiking trail, which runs between Geronimo Trail and Indian Creek Road
  • A disc golf course, volleyball court and soccer field, which are all available at the Association Complex near the entrance of the neighborhood
Jessica Hollis Park is one of the closest spots for the general public to access Lake Austin, and it features 15 covered picnic tables. Paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing are among the most popular activities on the lake. “It’s a pristine lake,” Gonzalez says. “Some days it’s like glass.” Locals looking for more fun on the water also have Lake Travis at their disposal. Lake Travis is accessible from Mansfield Dam Park, just 4 miles away.
