Coronado Hills is a northeast Austin community with settled charm

Coronado Hills is a small pocket of Austin where single-family homes blend seamlessly with condo complexes on tranquil, tucked-away streets. Most of the housing here was built in the 1960s and ’70s, giving the area a settled, consistent look. The quiet residential setting coexists with access to an assortment of daily amenities. Residents are close to multiple public schools, several places to eat and three of the city’s major highways.

A mix of housing types with varied prices

Classic ranch-style homes make up much of the area, and they come with amenities like wood-burning fireplaces and covered patios. There are properties in the area that have already received renovations, while others still offer plenty of room for personalization. Coronado Hills' single-family houses run from the lower $300,000s to the lower $700,000s. Condo communities in the area, like Old Town Condos and Villas of Coronado Hills, have two-story units with vaulted ceilings and attached garages, along with shared amenities such as pools. These properties sell for prices from the lower $200,000s to the mid-$200,000s, with monthly HOA fees between $400 and $500 in most cases. The neighborhood’s median sale price of $250,000 is much less than the citywide median of roughly $550,000.

Newcomers can find community here through the active Coronado Hills/Creekside Neighborhood Association. The organization meets monthly, publishes a newsletter the first week of each month and organizes events like a neighborhood yard sale and coffee pop-ups.

Students are close to Austin ISD and charter schools

Kids in Coronado Hills can enter the highly rated Austin Independent School District. Austin ISD’s Northeast Early College High School is in the neighborhood, and students there can enter the P-TECH program to earn a free associate degree in Local Area Network Systems with a specialization in cybersecurity. Austin Achieve Elementary School-Northeast and Austin Achieve High School are also in Coronado Hills, part of a system of tuition-free public charter schools. Austin Achieve has a longer school year and longer school days for dozens of hours of additional learning.

Easy access to highways, public transit and nearby suburbs

Getting around Coronado Hills and beyond is straightforward. U.S. 183 and U.S. 290 run directly through the area, and Interstate 35 is nearby. You can hop on 183 to get to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, located 12 miles away. I-35 connects commuters to downtown Austin, which is 6 miles away. U.S. 290 is a route to some of the communities just outside Austin, like Manor and Elgin. Locals have access to several CapMetro bus stops as well, along stretches like Cameron Road. “Everything is very close by,” says local Realtor Ami Davis, who’s with Christie’s International Real Estate and has about 20 years of experience in the industry.

Everyday shopping and local eateries are close by

Residents don’t have to look far for restaurants and other commercial amenities. There are multiple spots around the neighborhood’s perimeter. Some of the choices include:

  • El Rinconcito Del Sabor, where the beef soup and the enchiladas are popular picks
  • Oriental Express, where you can fill up at the buffet
  • The Silver Medal, which is an old-school dive bar serving hot dogs and burgers
  • Xatruch504, which is a food truck for traditional Honduran fare
Oriental Express shares the Cameron Oaks Plaza shopping center with stores including La Hacienda Market and Family Dollar. There’s also a Walmart Supercenter about 2 miles north, while the Capital Plaza shopping center 2 miles south features Target, Foot Locker, Burlington and Ross Dress for Less.

Bartholomew Park and Mueller provide green space

You can make a relatively short trip outside the neighborhood to get some fresh air. "Most people would either shoot down Berkman and hit up Bartholomew Park in Windsor Park. It’s a giant park,” Davis says. “Then, if you continue down Berkman, you’ll hit Mueller.” Bartholomew District Park spans 57 acres and is 2 miles away in the neighborhood of Windsor Park on the other side of U.S. 290. The space has a playground, an 18-hole disc golf course and a splash pad that’s available from May through October. Mueller is a master-planned, mixed-use community that’s just over 2 miles from Coronado Hills and has several parks, including:

  • Girard Kinney Park, a 30-acre spot with a loop trail and a lake
  • Carillo de Garcia Park, a space that’s 10 acres and has basketball and tennis courts
  • Mary Elizabeth Branch Park, a roughly 4-acre place with sand volleyball courts

I am generally satisfied with the local business in this area, although it could still use some improvements
