Education through Austin High School and Austin Community College

North Side is part of the Austin Independent School District, which receives an A-minus rating from Niche. Students here can enroll in any AISD school, as long as there’s an open seat. Nearby school options include the A-rated Mathews Elementary School, which serves students from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, as well as O. Henry Middle School and Austin High School, both rated A-minus. Austin High School offers four specific academies for entering ninth-grade students, each with a distinct focus area, such as Global Studies or Science & Innovation. City parks and recreation centers cater to active lifestyles

North Side residents are within walking distance of several city parks, including Duncan Neighborhood Park, Pease District Park and Woolridge Square, a historic green space with a gazebo and open lawns for picnicking. The neighborhood is also home to House Park, which includes the AISD football stadium and Austin Recreation Center, an indoor community facility with a gymnasium and fitness programs like Jazzercise and Tai Chi. Across from the rec center is the Heath Eiland & Morgan Moss BMX and Skate Park. In Pease District Park, locals can enjoy an extensive green space, as well as spots like the Shoal Creek area, which offers paths for walking and biking. The Texas Capitol campus is located half a mile east of North Side and features paved walkways, iconic state monuments and public libraries.

There are abundant shopping and dining options in North Side, including restaurant favorites such as The Tavern—a popular sports bar serving pub fare —and ALC Steaks, a more upscale establishment offering hand-cut steak dishes. In the morning, residents can grab an early brew from Idlewild Coffee. Various local shops, such as Crystal Works and Lauren Owen of Texas, a vintage clothing store, are scattered throughout the area. For grocery shopping and big-box options, places like Whole Foods Market and Target are only a mile away.

Sidewalks, public transit and nearby highways make travel easy

North Side is very pedestrian-friendly, with sidewalk-lined streets, bike paths and crosswalks at every major intersection. When it’s time to drive, residents have easy access to main routes like Lamar Boulevard bordering the neighborhood to the west and Interstate 35, a mile east of the area. Core city neighborhoods, including Downtown Austin, the Financial District and the Museum District, are all within a mile radius. CapMetro bus routes and shuttle lines pass through the area, and the nearest stop on Austin’s rail line is Downtown Station, about 1.5 miles from the neighborhood. For air travel, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is a 12-mile drive away.
