Quarry is suburban living with rock-solid accessibility

Quarry is a pocket of Austin that was once part of an area with limestone quarries that are now long gone. Today, the area has carved out a convenient location surrounded by amenities. Anchored by the quiet Balcones Woods and Mesa Park subdivisions, Quarry is within a few miles of two of Austin’s signature shopping centers: The Domain and The Arboretum. One of the city’s largest hospitals fills one corner of the neighborhood, and a highly rated high school is in the another. The MoPac Expressway and U.S. Route 183 surround the area, making commutes to other parts of the city a breeze.

Established homes with yard space

Quarry has a firm foundation of late-20th-century homes. The majority of the homes in this area are ranch and colonial-style homes built in the 1970s and 1980s. Houses sit back from the road a bit on lots around one-fifth of an acre. Sidewalks line many blocks, connecting neighbors and making walks around the neighborhood easier. “It’s really turned into much more of a cohesive neighborhood area,” says Jonathan Stilley, broker and owner of Jonathan Stilley Real Estate with over 20 years of industry experience. “In the days of social media, where you have 1,000 friends but you’ve never met any of them, it’s a lot more of that kind of neighborhood where you see kids out on their bikes in the streets. We’re at the point where we walk to [Hubert C. Schroeter Park] and we know people and we know their dogs, we know their dogs’ names.” Properties sell from the mid-$300,000s to the mid-$900,000s, depending on their condition.

Austin ISD’s Davis Elementary School is located nearby and features a STEM lab that gives students hands-on experiences with robots, plants and more. The district also offers several school choice pathways, including magnet schools, admissions-based programs and transfers.

The highly rated, private Hyde Park Schools’ Upper School Campus is in the northeast corner of the neighborhood and serves students in Grades 9 through 12. The school has a fine arts department with classes in guitar, bass, digital art and media, and more.

Shopping centers, grocery stores and restaurants are minutes away

This section of Austin is packed with stores and places to eat, many of them located along Route 183 and the MoPac Expressway. "The biggest thing there is just convenience to everything,” Stilley says of the area. “So much of what we deal with in Austin is traffic. If you’re in that area, you’re two exits from everything.” The Arboretum and The Domain are open-air shopping centers nearby, each featuring dozens of major retailers and restaurants. For groceries, Trader Joe’s, H-E-B, Costco, Sam’s Club and two Whole Foods Markets are within about 3 miles of the Quarry area. When cooking isn’t in the cards, you can choose from nearby restaurants like:

  • Roaring Fork, an American West-inspired spot for ribeyes, pork tenderloin and more
  • Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, where you can fill up on Cajun-style foods, including gumbo
  • Vida Verde Kitchen, a Mexican restaurant with a daily happy hour
  • Weladee Thai Kitchen, where you can finish your meal with an order of mango sticky rice

Outdoor spaces with playgrounds, trails and lake activities

Hubert C. Schroeter Neighborhood Park is one of the area’s landmarks, a 12-acre green space that’s within walking distance for many. “Schroeter Park is heavily frequented, because it’s got a big open space where people will do everything from frisbee to kids playing ball,” Stilley says. “It’s got a nice crushed granite path that goes around it. And it’s got a playground in the middle that’s really geared toward younger kids.” Locals can also explore membership at the Christian Life Center, a fitness center operated by Hyde Park Baptist Church. Memberships provide access to an adjacent lake for fishing, kayaking and sailing. Permits are also available for public lake access. Other outdoor attractions, within 4 miles of Quarry, include:

  • Balcones District Park, a spot with a pool that’s open from late May through mid-August and access to the roughly 6-mile, paved Northern Walnut Creek Trail
  • Riata Neighborhood Park, a space with tennis courts and a trail around a lake
  • Yett Creek Neighborhood Park, a place to escape with a scenic hike across roughly 40 acres

How residents get around and reach other parts of Austin

Though you'll find most of what you need a few miles of Quarry’s homes, the area’s highways can help you reach key points of the city. The MoPac Expressway connects to downtown about 12 miles south. Route 183 takes you toward Austin-Bergstrom International Airport about 20 miles away. CapMetro bus stops are close by along West Braker Lane, a stretch that also has bike lanes. You don’t have to leave the neighborhood to access emergency medical care at the Ascension Seton Northwest Hospital, located off Research Boulevard.
