A small square of Downtown Austin
A mix of businesses and residential housing, Wooldridge Square is a roughly four-by-five block that sits diagonal to the Governor’s Mansion, the Capitol Complex and is home to a public square that was part of the city’s original design. “Downtown Austin is very walkable and compact,” says Laura Jorgensen, a Tipster tour director and guide. “It’s easy to navigate as a pedestrian.” There are plenty of sightseeing opportunities while walking through Wooldridge Square Park, including the Texas State Capital, Austin History Center and the Space Cowboy mural. While there isn’t a lot of housing in this neighborhood, it’s possible to find a condo or loft in a historic building.
The Paramount Theatre can be found right on Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas.

For a more casual happy hour spot, Upstairs at Caroline has giant Jenga, Foosball and corn hole. For groceries, there are two Whole Foods, one on the east side of the city the other on the west side. And there’s a Trader Joe’s on Third Street. All three are less than a mile away and have free parking for shoppers.

Public square that's perfect for picnics
In a grid of gray and beige buildings, the one-acre green block that is Wooldridge Square Park stands out. It was part of the original plans for the city in 1839, but it wasn’t until 1909 that the white classical revival-style gazebo was added. While the spot was once popular with influential speakers like Booker T. Washington to address the public, it is now more commonly used for live music and picnics.
