Bainbridge Island beachfront overlooking Seattle’s skyline

Madrono Park is a community situated between Puget Sound and the fairways of the Wing Point Golf and Country Club. Set on a central, eastern-facing tip of Bainbridge Island, the neighborhood’s beachfront has unobstructed views of the water and Seattle. “Madrono Park has got that community feel where everyone gets to know everyone, and if you don’t know someone yet, the longer you stay, the smaller the community gets,” says Lia Uhrin, who once lived in the neighborhood and is a realtor with Coldwell Banker Bain. “It’s nice; you can walk to and from Hawley Cove Park, and you’ll see people going to the country club with golf clubs.”

Hawley Cove Park’s beach overlooks a section of the Sound called Eagle Harbor, where ferries pass regularly. Less than a mile of trail runs through the park’s almost 12 acres toward Wing Point Way. Since 1903, Wing Point Golf and Country Club has offered memberships, with amenities such as access to the 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, pool and both social and dining events. Continuing an art movement that started in Seattle, an 18-foot troll made of recycled wood named “Pia the Peacekeeper” was built at the entrance to Sakai Park to inspire communities to step into nature and remind them that trash can be repurposed. Roughly 3 miles of woodchip trails weave around the park’s meadows, pond and creek.

Million-dollar homes overlooking Seattle’s skyline

Trees tower over single-family homes, providing shade and privacy. Raised ranch-style homes and contemporary cottages comprise some of the architecture along the waterfront and streets by the golf course. Prices start at roughly $1.3 million for properties on less than a half-acre lot, away from the water, and go up to $5.5 million for waterfront properties and over 2 acres. “Homes listed go off-market within the week because there’s a big buyer group looking to retire on the Island, and others that are just looking for a slower pace of life but still want to be close to the city,” Uhrin says.

First Friday Art Walks in Winslow

On the first Friday of each month, galleries and museums along Winslow Way open their doors for First Friday Art Walks. Although participating businesses change each year, the basis of lending support to local artisans and chefs remains the same. Bainbridge Island Museum of Art is among the list of core contributors and maintains a rotating collection of contemporary art exhibits.

Winslow’s selection of local eateries and shops

Though Madrono Park does not have a dedicated area for shops or restaurants, the neighborhood is just 2 miles east of Winslow, which is Bainbridge Island’s downtown. Sidewalks line Winslow Way across downtown, from Eagle Harbor Book Co. to the grocer, Town and Country Market. Streamliner Diner was established in 1980 on the east end of Winslow Way and makes breakfast in its open, aluminum-covered kitchen. On the west end of this street, Proper Fish creates seafood dishes, including British-style fish and chips.

Navigating from Wing Point to Winslow Way

Wing Point Road and Madrono Drive trace the neighborhood’s tip and merge with Wing Point Way, connecting waterfront properties with the golf course further inland. The downtown intersection of Winslow Way and island-wide thoroughfare Washington state Route 305 marks the entrance to the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry terminal. The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport – or Sea-Tac – is a 25-mile drive.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
