The area is an expansive space of rolling hills, scenic farmland, and green forests with pockets of residential areas scattered throughout. “The area really has a country setting,” says Justin Baker, a resident of West Deer and real estate agent at RE/MAX. “The township is more rural than neighboring communities but still has access to Pittsburgh.”

Housing in West Deer Township provides a sense of privacy and seclusion that cannot be found in the city. “It's more of a rural suburb,” says Sara Leitera, a Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway, “Houses are a lot further apart with sizeable plots.” Large ranch-style farmhouses are nestled throughout the area's rolling hills and forests. Bi-level and split-level houses with vinyl exteriors can be found in the more central regions of the township. These houses have front porches, making for a great spot to enjoy the summer months. Prices range from $200,000 to $400,000.

Schools in the Deer Lake School District
The Deer Lakes School District serves West Deer Township and two other surrounding Townships. Students may begin their education at Curtisville Primary Center and East Union Intermediate Center, both of which scored a B-minus rating on Niche. Students may continue their education at Deer Lakes Middle School, which scored a B rating on Niche. Deer Lakes High School offers technical training and 19 career-oriented courses through the A.W. Beattie Career Center.
Deer Lakes Middle School serves grades six through eight.

Since 2001, the Narcisi Winery has provided wine-tasting tours, tastings, and private events to customers from all over the state. The winery is tucked away in the heart of the township and features a robust menu for some upscale dining. Dollar General provides the area with weekly groceries, and residents can travel to North Towne Square for more retail shopping opportunities. Bairdford United Methodist Church serves the area.

Explore the stars at the Wagman Observatory
Outdoor lovers will find themselves right at home in West Deer Township as activities such as Disc golf, fishing, and stargazing can all be found at Deer Lakes Park. The 1180 acres of expansive green space has miles of hiking trails and three-man-made, spring-fed lakes for fisherman to drop in their lines. The Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory was built in 1997 and is the first observatory in western Pennsylvania committed to public education and recreational enjoyment of astronomy. The observatory is popular for field trips from local groups and the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh. Golfers can flock to the Pittsburgh National Golf Club for its 18-hole course, which features scenic views of the rolling hills.
