Variety in homes and entertainment
From the tiniest bungalow tucked beside a busy street to the deep lawn of a historic custom home, and from the newest wine craze to classic homemade ice cream, Downtown Bakersfield provides locals with variety. East of Chester Avenue is mostly commercial space, although there are a few single-family homes and apartments scattered throughout, many sitting close together in natural shades of beige and brown. Residents can easily walk or take a short bike ride to the neighborhood’s popular city park, art museums and local wineries, which the area just happens to be known for.
From bungalows to custom homes
“With new multifamily builds, there’s lots of opportunity,” says Adam Belter, Broker Associate and managing partner of the Belter Group at Coldwell Banker. Fenced-in 1,000- to 1,500-square-foot ranch homes and bungalows are typically priced between $200,000 and $300,000. West of Chester Avenue in an area called Westchester are some of Bakersfield’s original custom homes, dating back as early as the 1910s. Lots are much larger, and no two houses are the same. “They all have their own characteristics, even personalities,” Belter says, “which means they can get pricey.” The largest homes, especially those near the banks of the Kern River, can spike upwards of $500,000.

Walking from winery to creamery
Residents head to 18th Street and Chester Avenue, where multiple wine bars offer evening tastings. Tlo Wines is family-owned and gets its grapes locally, and The 18hundred serves burgers and shakes in an industrial atmosphere. On 19th Street, friends gather for some savory Latin American bites and craft cocktails at Zama. Nearby on Wall Street, a neon sign welcomes locals to Guthrie’s Alley Cat, a retro, cash-only dive bar. For dessert, residents go to the north side for homemade ice cream at Rosemary’s Family Creamery. On the east side of town, residents grab groceries and essentials at Superior Grocers.
