The contemporary, single-family homes were built from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. Many of them have Mediterranean-style designs with clay tile roofing and stucco exteriors. Most homes have driveways and attached two-car garages; some lots are roomy and include private in-ground pools. Silver Creek Park has playgrounds and restrooms and is conveniently located by the elementary school. "The most popular thing at the park is the covered basketball courts called 'The Pavilion.' It gets the most use," says Keith Powell, recreation and parks supervisor for the city of Bakersfield. "A lot of people come out to play tennis. The swimming pool is open for recreational swimming and lessons during the summer." The disc golf course and horseshoe pits are also popular, and outdoor fitness equipment is available in the park's southwest corner. Powell describes Silver Lake Community Center: "It's a multipurpose room and office; everything is in there. We also have a summer camp with up to 25 to 30 kids, and the majority are from the area."Wilderness Park on the neighborhood's west side has a large playground, basketball courts and a walking path around its perimeter. A few miles south of the neighborhood, the Kaiser Permanente Sports Village Soccer Complex is frequently used by soccer leagues.
Suburu School, Lakeside School, then Independence High
Public schools include Donald E. Suburu School for kindergarten through fifth grade. Suburu is in the center of the community. Junior high students may attend Lakeside School, which is a K-8 school. Both schools earn a C-minus grade from Niche. Independence High School has a B-plus and is ranked No. 4 among Niche's standout high schools in the Bakersfield area. The school has strong athletics and a wide selection of extracurricular activities. The neighborhood's Silver Lake Park is the setting for one of the annual Juneteenth celebrations put on by the NAACP in Bakersfield. The family friendly event features entertainers, DJs, games and food. Golden Empire Transit (GET) has bus stops on streets like Harris Road, Panama Lane and Gosford Road. The downtown Bakersfield Train Station has Amtrak trains, which travel northwest toward Sacramento and San Francisco, passing cities like Fresno and Modesto on the way.Panama Lane, which runs to Silver Lake's south, provides access to state Route 99 — the Golden State Highway — and Interstate 5. It's about 13 miles from the neighborhood to Meadows Field Airport, served by American Airlines and United. Bakersfield Municipal Airport, though closer, is used for general aviation. Hollywood Burbank Airport and LAX are within a 100-mile drive.
Gosford Village for shopping and restaurants
Gosford Village, a large shopping center west of Gosford Road, has big brands like Walmart, Sam's Club, Kohl's and Petco. Restaurants include well-known chains like Chili's Grill and Bar and Chipotle. Ten Gu Ramen has over a dozen varieties of ramen, plus udon, rice bowls and other Japanese dishes.Toward the east, across Ashe Road, are more businesses, including Rancho Grande Mexican Grill. Owner Andres Lopez says customers hang out at the restaurant for NFL Sunday Ticket. They also hold an anniversary party with live music and host a Cinco de Mayo celebration. There is WinCo Foods to the south on Panama Lane, and about a couple of miles east of that, an Albertsons and the Sprouts Farmers Market that opened in spring 2024.
Oil drilling affects air quality and health
Bakersfield is known as the oil capital of California, and Kern County produces more oil than any other county in the country. As a result, the area often struggles with air pollution. According to Michelle Corson, public relations officer at Kern County Public Health Services Department, the percentage of people in Kern County diagnosed with asthma is about 2.6 higher than the state average.
