A crescent on the banks of the Monongahela River

Just eight miles south of central Pittsburgh, Baldwin is a narrow, six-square-mile crescent arching southward from the banks of the Monongahela River. It’s a sort of oasis for anyone searching for quieter confines outside the much busier city but wanting to be near enough to the important things. “I love to say it’s closer to the city and all amenities like hospitals, shopping centers, malls and restaurants,” says Sancha Rai, a Realtor with Realty One Group.

Cape Cods and ranch-style homes

Baldwin's houses are as different as the community is long. It’s a densely populated, throwback suburb with consistently inconsistent architectural styles. Primarily, the two- and three-bedroom homes are brick with vinyl siding thrown in here and there. Modest Cape Cods rest alongside ranch-style homes, and hilly blocks of split-level homes coexist with ranch styles, too. Well-tended yards are common throughout. With a median home price of around $215,000, prospective Baldwin homebuyers can expect to spend about $160,000 to $300,000. At the lower end of that range, they're likely to find a two-bedroom house, while at the top end, those homes generally consist of five-bedroom homes. “The houses are not staying in the market for a long time,” Rai says, advising prospective buyers to consider that as they house hunt. The CAP Index crime score in Baldwin is 4 out of 10, on par with the national score.

Enjoying sports at Elm Leaf Park

In their free time, kids and their parents can make their way over to Elm Leaf Park on Elm Leaf Drive. It’s got fenced-in baseball and softball fields, complete with dugouts. There are bright blue basketball courts, playgrounds, an Olympic-sized pool for the warmer months, plus a pavilion that you can rent.

The Baldwin Borough Public Library provides access to reading materials — even eBooks. The library has regular children, teen and adult events crafted around a variety of interests, from movies to food and, of course, books.

Casual dining in Baldwin and a short drive to pick up groceries

The Backdraft Bar and Grill's red-accented walls provide a warm backdrop for evenings playing pool or watching local bands play. On weeknights, families swing by to chow on classic burgers and beer-battered fried fish. Halftime Lounge is another Baldwin hangout. Grocery stores and big-box chains are a short drive away in West Mifflin.

Of course, with Pittsburgh nearby, residents always have the option of heading into the big city for food and entertainment. “Baldwin’s close to downtown and all of its shopping, groceries, bars and restaurants,” Rai says.

Buses and highways into Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses run to and from Pittsburgh, and drivers have access to state Route 51 for highway travel. Freight trains pass through the community, and there's a small regional airport just east, but residents will need to drive into Pittsburgh to catch an Amtrak train from Pittsburgh Union Station or a flight through the Pittsburgh International Airport.
