Making strides and building a name
Barclay is a small neighborhood less than 2 miles from downtown Baltimore that brims with the colors of city life and the natural landscape. Much of the community is made of homes and parks, and a walk through the neighborhood will likely lead past a colorful mural, community garden or uniquely colored rowhouse from the 1920s. Many of these homes are just a short walk away from shopping and dining options. Nearby roads allow access to downtown events and the Maryland Zoo. "Every row house has its own history," says Brad Schlegel, the outreach chair for the Barclay Midway Old Goucher Coalition, who regularly volunteers on community initiatives. "For example, a lot of ballplayers for the original Orioles used to play in Barclay at Union Park, which doesn't exist anymore."
The Barclay neighborhood is located just three miles from Downtown Baltimore.
Barclay residents can enjoy the outdoors at several community gardens.

1920s rowhomes and townhouses
Barclay homes look more uniform than those in other Baltimore neighborhoods, with blocks of Federal-style red brick row houses and townhouses, many of which have small marble porches. Most of these two- and three-story homes were built in the early 1900s and have been renovated in recent years. Some homeowners have painted the porches and exterior walls to add their own splash of character to the streetscape. "There certainly is a variety of row houses, and that's what got me interested in the neighborhood to begin with," says Schlegel. Home prices here tend to range from $200,000 to $500,000.
Three-story row homes line the streets of the Barclay neighborhood.
Most row homes in the Barclay neighborhood feature a classic red brick facade.

Baltimore playsets and basketball courts
On the western end of the community, two parks neighbor each other, with Calvert Street Park’s open green space right next to the playset and two half basketball courts at King and Kennedy Park. On the east side of the neighborhood, Greenmount Recreation Center provides a place for exercise no matter the season, including a full gym for pick-up basketball games. Mund Park and Playground is right across the street from the rec center with more basketball courts and playsets. The Maryland Zoo is less than 3 miles to the east of the neighborhood and home to the largest African penguin breeding colony in the country.
Calvert Street Park is a popular place for Barclay residents to play a basketball.
