Barclay
Neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City 21218
1920s rowhomes and townhouses
Barclay homes look more uniform than those in other Baltimore neighborhoods, with blocks of Federal-style red brick row houses and townhouses, many of which have small marble porches. Most of these two- and three-story homes were built in the early 1900s and have been renovated in recent years. Some homeowners have painted the porches and exterior walls to add their own splash of character to the streetscape. "There certainly is a variety of row houses, and that's what got me interested in the neighborhood to begin with," says Schlegel. Home prices here tend to range from $200,000 to $500,000.Baltimore playsets and basketball courts
On the western end of the community, two parks neighbor each other, with Calvert Street Park’s open green space right next to the playset and two half basketball courts at King and Kennedy Park. On the east side of the neighborhood, Greenmount Recreation Center provides a place for exercise no matter the season, including a full gym for pick-up basketball games. Mund Park and Playground is right across the street from the rec center with more basketball courts and playsets. The Maryland Zoo is less than 3 miles to the east of the neighborhood and home to the largest African penguin breeding colony in the country.Renowned arts educations with Baltimore Public Schools
Most students begin their education at Dallas F. Nicholas Sr. Elementary, which receives a C-minus rating on Niche, or attend Barclay Elementary School, a kindergarten through eighth grade school which also earns a C-minus. These schools are situated near homes, and many students walk to class. Most high school students attend the C-rated Baltimore Design School, ranked as the fifth-best school for arts in Maryland. The school works to prepare students for college courses, with a special emphasis on fields like architecture, fashion and graphic design.Baltimore excitement and events
The Orioles and the Ravens play in stadiums located along the waterfront, and Baltimore's National Aquarium offers tours and special events. Each August, artists from around the country gather to display paintings and sculptures at Artscape in August, the largest free arts festival in the U.S. The event also includes carnival rides, food vendors and live music.Light rails, bus routes and nearby major roads
Residents have about a 2-mile drive to downtown, but U.S. Route 40 and other roads in and around Barclay can get clogged with rush hour traffic. Public transportation options are also available, including Baltimore Link bus routes and the North Ave light rail station. The neighborhood is seven blocks from the Penn Station Amtrak station and 14 miles from the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The Johns Hopkins Hospital is less than 3 miles away and is ranked the best hospital in the state by U.S. News and World Report.Nearby breakfast diners and late night snacks
There are several bars and restaurants a short walk from the community. Stone Tavern is an established spot, known for its breakfast wraps, omelets and platters. 2AM Project is a nearby local chain that offers late-night dining options and delivery. Residents can grocery shop at a Safeway or Save A Lot less than a mile away.
