Belair-Edison
Parkland all around
Sharing borders with both Herring Run Park and Clifton Park, nature abounds here. Herring Run Park offers 375 acres of woodlands and valleys, with the Herring Run Stream running throughout. Residents spend their time here hiking the area’s many trails, playing soccer on the weekends, and enjoying the playground. Clifton Park, once farmland owned by Johns Hopkins himself, is another urban oasis that features a public municipal golf course, tennis courts, and many more walking trails. The park is also home to "Real Food Farm," a six-acre urban sustainable garden.A designated Baltimore City Main Streets Community
The neighborhood’s “main street” is actually located at the intersection of Belair Road and Erdman Avenue. “In Belair-Edison, we have 50 businesses on the main street,” says Watkins. “It’s a mix of restaurants, barber shops, beauty salons, convenience stores, and things like that.” Residents can find a variety of cuisines here, from Caribbean to African to Halal foods. For dessert, Sydney’s Ice Creams serves up house-made scoops and pints. Outside of the Main Street area, Belair-Edison’s commercial options include shopping centers with conveniences like Save A Lot or Food Depot. And just on the other side of Herring Run Park is Koko’s Pub, where residents love to go for their award-winning crabcakes, according to Watkins.Events that uplift the community
The Belair-Edison Neighborhoods organization maintains an active calendar of events. Many are geared toward uplifting the lives of residents in the community; as an HUD-certified organization, they offer first-time homebuyer workshops and bring in partner organizations that provide workshops for small business owners or prospective small business owners. Other events uplift the community in general, like neighborhood cleanups. Of course, there are family-friendly events, too; popular ones include movies in the park, held for a few weeks in the summer at Herring Run Park, and the annual Fall Festival, where residents come out for food, games, entertainment, and even a pumpkin patch.
A community primarily of rowhouses
Densely populated, this area is largely composed of traditional two-storied red-brick rowhouses built between the 1920s and 1950s, many with basements and roofed front porches. You’ll also find small, single-family homes here, primarily from the 1920s, in styles like bungalows and Cape Cods. Most homes in the neighborhood are on tree-lined streets, with small front yards and back yards that open out to alleyways. Prices range from about $120,000 to $335,000, depending on size and condition.Local Baltimore City Public Schools
Students in the neighborhood are served by Baltimore City Public Schools, which allows students to choose their own middle and high schools. The neighborhood is zoned for The Belair-Edison School, which serves kindergarten through eighth-grade students and is graded C-minus by Niche. Students can apply to attend the nearby Baltimore City College, which does serve high schoolers, not college students. The school, graded A-minus by Niche, is a college preparatory institution with selective admissions and serves as the IB world school for the district.Getting around Belair-Edison
Residents are within 2-3 miles of Interstates 895 and 95, so getting around the greater Baltimore area is convenient; many residents even commute as far as Washington, D.C., for work. Buses make stops throughout the neighborhood, primarily along Belair Road and Erdman Avenue. For bigger trips, the Baltimore-Washington International Airport is within 15 miles from home.
