Just 2 miles north of downtown, East Baltimore Midway offers residents an urban lifestyle among its gridded and walkable streets. The area has an industrial history, which can be seen in the brick factory buildings on almost every block. In recent years, these establishments have been either retired or abandoned – most converted into artistic or living spaces. Locals of the neighborhood can walk from their rowhome to a local grocer or opt for a bench break in one of the small pocket parks, and Penn Station is a short walk west. The community puts forth efforts for a better tomorrow through after-school programs at Cecil Kirk Recreation Center and community gardens at Boone Street Commons. “It’s an up-and-coming area. Some blocks are better than others, but we’re seeing change,” says Carl Smith, a Realtor at Smart Realty with 12 years of experience in the Baltimore area. “And a lot of the streets connect to Broadway, which runs right to Johns Hopkins Hospital.”
Classic Baltimore rowhouses and townhomes
Densely populated, prospective buyers can choose from a variety of traditional Baltimore rowhouses and townhomes. These two- to three-story properties typically have Italianate or Federal design influence, some with front porches and more recent renovations. “There’s a historic charm in these older homes that you really don’t see anymore,” Smith says. “Some are four stories, and some even have balconies on the roof.” Investment properties in need of restoration might cost between $70,000 and $100,000. Dwellings that are move-in ready with floor-to-ceiling makeovers, some with new appliances and fenced-in backyards, can range from $150,000 to $350,000 depending on the size and floor plan.

For a taste of local culture and a drink or two on the back patio, patrons stop by the long-standing Wooden Nickel Lounge. Another way to enjoy the neighborhood’s culture is by visiting The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum located on the south side, a wax museum highlighting notable African Americans from the slavery era to today’s athletes and scientists.
