Evergreen Lawn
Neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City 21216, 21223
Original Baltimore-style row houses
The market in Evergreen Lawn consists solely of row houses in various conditions. Despite the consistent style of homes, architectural features vary from one block to the next. While some properties incorporate bay windows on the first and second floors, others have a Federal-style construction with stone front porches. “It’s pretty up-and-coming,” Beasley says. “The price is convenient, and you’re getting a nice, renovated house.” Prices most often range from $120,000 to $300,000, depending on recent restorations, though some homes up for auction can start well below $100,000. Many properties have modest front lawns and back yards, and some have parking spaces in the back alleys. Owners often put up seating areas on their small porches and decorate with planters and flowers.Park access and strengthening the community at Bentalou Rec Center
Evergreen Lawn sits near numerous outdoor recreation spaces. Helen Mackall Park has a playground, basketball courts and open green fields, shaded by Japanese elms. Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park is the largest contiguous park in the city. Visitors can hike miles of trails, participate in programs at the Carrie Murray Nature Center or enjoy a picnic at various pavilions and shelter areas. Just under 3 miles north, Druid Hill Park offers a host of recreation, from swimming pools and disc golf to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. Locals can participate in indoor activities year-round at the Bentalou Recreation Center, home of the popular youth basketball program, the Project Survival League. This team brings players and their families together, while also helping children hone their athletic abilities and learn valuable life skills from volunteer mentors.Public and charter schools within a few blocks of Evergreen Lawn
Prekindergarten through second graders are zoned for Billie Holiday Elementary and Katherine Johnson Global Academy for Grades 3 through 8. Niche gives these schools C-minus and D-plus grades, respectively. Alternatively, families can opt for the Empowerment Academy, a charter school in the neighborhood with a C-minus rating that has elementary and middle school education. Students have school choice for Grades 9 through 12, with C-minus-rated Carver Vocational-Technical High as a nearby option. Carver offers courses tailored to student career interests, complete with certification when possible.Baltimore music venues, museums and sports games within 3 miles
While Gwynns Falls/Leakin and Druid Hill host a few events, like nature walks and movie nights, most activities take place in the heart of Baltimore. Orioles fans can catch a game at Camden Yards, and the Ravens play at M&T Bank Stadium, both of which sit within 3 miles. Downtown activities, like art museums and the Baltimore Soundstage are also 3 miles away, along with the National Aquarium in the Inner Harbor. These attractions can be reached by CityLink buses or a 10-to-20-minute drive on Route 40.Navigating the buses, trains and thoroughfares of Evergreen Lawn

Maryland Transit Administration buses stop throughout the neighborhood on Bentalou Street and Edmondson Avenue. “It’s an easy commute to downtown. Public transit is there, and then there’s convenience to drive,” says Realtor Shanazar Beasley of Taylor Properties since 2015. “It’s literally 15 minutes to get downtown from there.” As Beasley says, public transportation isn’t the only way to get around. Surrounded by routes 40 and 1, Evergreen Lawn connects to major highways like interstates 95 and 83. About 10 miles away, both domestic and international flights take off from BWI Airport, directly accessible by train, bus or car.Shopping centers within a couple of miles and West Baltimore dining
Route 40 and Warwick Avenue lead to most of the shopping and dining options nearby, though many bars and sit-down restaurants are 3 miles east in downtown. Fast and casual restaurants within 1 mile include McDonald’s and independent takeout spots, such as Bobby’s Chicken. The Westside Shopping Center, only 1 mile south, has a Food Depot, banks and various retail stores and services. Buses off Bentalou Street head to Mondawmin Mall, about 2 miles north, near Druid Hill Park. The mall includes three levels of retailers, as well as a Shoppers grocery store. Coming in 2025, the University of Maryland has broken ground on a new health village at the mall, which will not only provide more healthcare to West Baltimore, but also many new job opportunities.
