Buzzing nightlife district amid centuries of history in Federal Hill
Federal Hill is one of Baltimore's oldest neighborhoods, evolving from a major city port in the late 1700s to a military battery on the Patapsco River during the War of 1812, to the bustling, walkable enclave of local businesses and historic rowhouses today. Locals can explore the American Visionary Art Museum, take in sweeping views of Inner Harbor from Federal Hill Park, or reach Downtown Baltimore in a matter of minutes by car, bike or bus.
Age-old rowhomes sit beside contemporary condos
The community is lined with old and new brick rowhouses in Federal and Greek Revival styles, some dating back to the 1880s and others built as recently as the 1990s. “If you're a buyer interested in historic preservation, there's a historic district with historic renovation guidelines. Some owners can apply for tax credits, and there's a lot of architectural integrity for the whole area,” says James Baldwin, a Realtor with Compass, with over 18 years of experience serving the greater Baltimore area. “It really appeals to a broad range of buyers, from downsizers to first-time buyers to investors.” Rowhouses are priced from the mid-$200,000s to the lower-$700,000s. There are also new-millennium-built condos on the market, ranging from the lower $100,000s to the lower $300,000s.
Places to dine and drink, or shop at historic Cross Street Market
Residents can stroll to the iconic Cross Street Market, which has operated in the community since 1846. Today, there is a diverse range of merchants in the market, selling butchered meats, street food and cocktails. Watershed is a standout spot, which serves oysters and Maryland blue crabs. Charles Street is a city-popular corridor for bars, eateries and nightlife. Residents can dine on sushi and ramen at Matsuri Restaurant, or order beer and bar bites at The Charles Baltimore, which hosts gameday watch parties.

Locals travel by roads or harbor waterways
Federal Hill is prized for being a convenient travel hub, where locals can easily get around on foot or by bike. “In much of the neighborhood, you can walk to Downtown or take public transportation, its very convenient for that,” says Baldwin. “There are bike lanes, water taxis at the base of Federal Hill, and it’s a quick walk to Camden Yards, which has the MARC Trains that go to Washington, D.C.”
Downtown Baltimore is a mile north, so commuters can get there by car, bike or by taking a CityLink Silver bus, which makes stops along Charles Street. The Federal Hill Ferry Terminal is a stop for the Baltimore Water Taxi’s Harbor Trolley, as well as the city’s Harbor Connector, where locals can take scenic boat rides to neighborhoods like Fells Point and Harbor East.
