Planned around streetcar lines and named for its proximity to Hanlon Park, the Forest Park community dates back over a century. In the 1800s, the neighborhood consisted of a handful of estates on the outskirts of Baltimore. As the city expanded, Forest Park went through many changes, including the addition of some multifamily buildings. It lies just across Liberty Heights Avenue from the Ashburton neighborhood, which is a major draw, says Will Rodgers, a Realtor with Samson Properties, who grew up in the area. “People want to get into Ashburton — it’s a premier area with classy, older homes. You can find bigger homes for less money in Forest Park, though.” Its location also appeals to commuters, who can access major highways and downtown Baltimore within a short drive.
Visiting Druid Hill Park and a nearby golf course
When residents moved to Forest Park in the 1920s, they were lured by access to the 100-acre Hanlon Park, which incorporated hillside paths designed by the Olmsted firm. The park encompassed Ashburton Lake, one of Baltimore’s few reservoirs for drinking water. Now, more than 100 years later, the park is under renovation. The city is in the process of switching to underwater reservoir tanks in the hopes of making the lake accessible for recreation. In the meantime, there are several other city parks within a short drive, including Druid Hill Park, about 2 miles east. This 745-acre space has courts for basketball and tennis, as well as a disc golf course. During their trip to the park, people can also visit the elephants in the Maryland Zoo or stop by the Rawlings Conservatory, where they can wander through palms, orchids and cacti. A little over 1 mile west is the Forest Park Golf Course, a public 18-hole course that originally opened in the 1930s.
Early 1900s homes in Forest Park
Most area housing was built during the city’s expansion in the early 1900s. There are three-story Colonial Revivals overlooking the park and two-story rowhouses with Dutch Colonial-style gambrel rooflines. Along Springdale Avenue, several duplexes are sided with Mission Revival-style false fronts to provide each half with its own grand entrance. Most houses rest back from the sidewalk behind grassy front yards. Some include a detached garage, and others have a concrete driveway at the rear of the house, which is accessible through the alley. In the late 1900s, most of the larger homes in Forest Park were transformed into apartments or condos, Rodgers says. In recent years, he says, a renewed interest in city living has resulted in many of these historic residences getting converted back to their original state. While developers and handy buyers sometimes pick up homes needing complete renovations in the $130,000 to $230,000 range, most listings start above $250,000. Remodeled townhouses and rowhouses generally sell between $250,000 and $300,000, and a fully updated Colonial Revival or Dutch Colonial with more than 3,000 square feet of living space can cost anywhere from $400,000 to $675,000.
Starting out at Hilton Elementary School
Forest Park children may begin their education at Hilton Elementary School, which earns a C-minus on Niche. Once they complete elementary school, they can select from several middle and high schools. Some attend sixth through eighth grades at Dr. Nathan A. Pitts-Ashburton Elementary/Middle School, also rated a C-minus. Forest Park High School earns a C-minus as well. Its campus was fully rebuilt in 2018, and students have access to 21st-century amenities, including a media center and drones. Some students apply to Bard High School Early College, which is located just past Druid Hill Park. It is a C-plus-rated public school that offers a full two years of dual enrollment through Bard College. With Baltimore City Community College and Coppin State University, continued learning opportunities are also available within a short drive.
Events in downtown Baltimore or Ashburton
With downtown Baltimore about 5 miles away, Forest Park residents can celebrate Lunar New Year at the Walters Art Museum, head to Camden Yards to watch Baltimore Orioles games and spend their fall weekends cheering for the Baltimore Ravens. Closer to home, they can join Ashburton’s annual Heritage Walk on Juneteenth to commemorate notable Baltimore citizens. During the summer, the Ashburton Area Association also hosts a garden tour, complete with live jazz music and champagne.
Walking to convenience stores and driving to Mondawmin Mall
Convenience stores and carryout restaurants line the major intersections along Liberty Heights Avenue. Locals can walk a few blocks west to Liberty Deli Grocery & Grill, Walgreens and Kennedy Fried Chicken. On Edgewood, there’s a liquor store and another small bodega as well. With the Mondawmin Mall around 1 mile southeast, residents can do a little weeknight shopping or have a sit-down meal at TGI Fridays. Maryland Transit Authority’s CityLink bus stops at the edge of the community give hungry diners the option to hop on a bus and access the nightlife in Mount Vernon or head to Remington, where the R. House food hall offers everything from Korean barbecue to Egyptian-style street food.
Commuting by car or CityLink buses
The MTA’s CityLink buses are not the only form of public transportation available. The MTA also offers a Metro line, with a station about 1 mile north of Forest Park. For farther trips, people can drive around 4 miles east to catch Amtrak trains to Washington, D.C., Philadephia and other major cities along the Eastern Seaboard. Car travel is also popular, and Maryland Route 26 connects drivers to the Interstate 695 Beltway.

Despite the rough exterior, it's a very comfortable place to live. Supermarket is close, people are personable, and I've hardly ever felt unsafe living here.
