Neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City 21207, 21229
If you drive west from Downtown Baltimore, past Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, you’ll eventually come to the historic village of Franklintown. Established in the early 1830s, this area was once envisioned as a resort community by founder William Freeman. Benefitting from increased traffic along the Franklin Turnpike (now Franklintown Road), this historic neighborhood featured a race course, an inn and a grist mill. Today, while the original mill building remains, this area has transitioned from a mill town into a rural, almost hidden residential community.
Houses in Franklintown consist primarily of detached single-family home options, ranging from historic renovated abodes to modern digs. Historic houses tend to feature late 18th century designs and materials like side-gabled roofs, fieldstone walls and wooden frames. While the more modern home styles include 1950s-era cottages and split-levels, as well as recently constructed American-Foursquare styles located along Ashman Hope Court and featuring two-tiered front porches. The average sales price here is $350,000, but price points can vary depending on the age, size and condition of the property. And because properties are not frequently listed for sale, when they do go on the market, homes tend to sell quickly here. "It's an interesting little neighborhood to try to sell," says Wendy LaGrant, resident and Realtor with Keller Williams. "People garner impressions, without really spending time here. I think that they miss the boat on the privacy of it, the quietness of it, the idyllic-ness of it."
Students here attend Baltimore City Public Schools like Dickey Hill Elementary/Middle and Forest Park High. Serving nearly 850 students, this high school offers a dual enrollment program for earning college credits early, as well as a wide variety of clubs from the SGA, and a Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, to a Future Business Leaders of America group.
Due to its secluded nature, for all your daily essentials residents of Franklintown will have to pop over to Woodlawn or one of its neighboring communities for large-scale grocery stores, pharmacies, casual eateries and retail options. The town’s sole long-standing eatery is the Bullwinkle Saloon located off of Dogwood Road. A no-frills bar, Bullwinkle’s offers pool tables, beer and some standard Baltimore menu items like crab cakes and burgers. Across the street, the historic Franklintown Inn is still in service, but not as a hotel. Instead, the Inn is available as a rental venue for celebrations, weddings and events. Just look for their vintage neon sign glowing out front.
For activities in the outdoors, residents are surrounded by Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, which offers acres of trails perfect for hiking and biking. While visiting the park, stop by the historic Orianda Mansion. It features vintage Italianate architecture, a gothic chapel, a cottage and a carriage house. Learn about the mansion’s former owner, railroad builder, Thomas Winans, while you let your little one take a ride on a miniature train.
For a change of pace, residents may live amidst a rural ambiance, but they’re still connected. With direct proximity to major thoroughfares like I-70 residents can always get where they need to be.
This is Franklintown, a serene historic neighborhood of West Baltimore.
