Walk to community centers and shuls in Glen
Glen is a compact northwest Baltimore neighborhood with commuter access, nearby parks and housing to meet a variety of budgets. The main appeal for Jewish residents, however, is that every home is within a few blocks of a shul. On Saturdays, people can leave their cars parked along the tree-shaded, one-way streets and walk with their families to worship. Two Christian churches and a mosque also lie within the neighborhood to serve members of other faiths. With nonprofit housing assistance, senior centers and a community center lining Park Heights Avenue, support and resources are within a short walk as well.
CHAI Baltimore and the Glen Neighborhood Improvement Association
Nonprofit groups are the cornerstones of Glen. Programs such as Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc., known as CHAI Baltimore, and the Associated Jewish Federation of Baltimore line Park Heights Avenue. Community members can find programs for seniors and help with a variety of needs. CHAI also hosts multicultural events and homebuyer workshops. The Glen Neighborhood Improvement Association, which was established in the early 1960s, is an active part of the community as well. They sponsor clean-up days, public-safety workshops and neighborhood beautification projects such as crosswalk art. During Rosh Hashanah, many residents gather with their families for a meal. To ensure that no one misses the celebration, the local congregations host elderly residents, and volunteers bring meals to those who don’t have the means to prepare one.
Grabbing a bite along Reisterstown Road
Restaurants and shops line Reisterstown Road, which marks Glen’s western boundary. Tov Pizza and KB Grill & Wok, both kosher, are within the community. A few blocks farther is the Reisterstown Road Plaza, with big-box shopping, including a Giant Food grocery store and the Home Depot. Many folks support family-owned Shlomo's Kosher Meat and Fish Market. At the corner of Reisterstown and Old Court roads, people can stop at Goldberg’s New York Bagels and Coffee to pick up breakfast or head to Oasis Uzbek Kebab House for a warm bowl of lamb soup or a salmon kebab. Some residents prefer to drive into the county, about 3 miles away, where they can shop at Fresh Market, says Michael Levine, an Associated Broker with Douglas Realty, who has worked with clients in the area.

Healthy Neighborhoods helps new homebuyers
Along the one-way residential streets, a range of options suits varying needs and budgets. “Homes are affordably priced, and because part of it is in the Healthy Neighborhoods, people can get loans through them,” Levine says. The Healthy Neighborhoods program provides grants and low-interest rate loans on residences within the qualifying areas. First-time homebuyers can find condos in 1970s brick complexes priced between $50,000 and $200,000, depending on size. Midcentury, semi-detached brick homes and townhouses may sell from $115,000 to $250,000. A decent percentage of housing is single-family residences from the early 1900s, which rest on neatly maintained grassy lawns and often have tidy hedges. Some feature Tudor-influenced elements, such as steeply angled front-facing gables. There are also some early 1900s Gambrel-roofed Dutch Colonials and pastel-painted bungalows with wide, sleepy front porches. Though community members sometimes sell their homes privately, the ones that hit the market generally range from $200,000 to $650,000.
The Glen neighborhood offers a variety of cozy single-family homes ranging from $50,000-650,000.

A choice between public schools and private Jewish schools
Many families choose to send their children to the neighborhood’s Jewish private schools, but kids may also attend Baltimore City Public Schools. Cross Country Elementary/Middle School serves preschool through eighth-grade students and earns a C on Niche. It is a designated green school for its focus on environmental service projects. Some students then apply to the A-rated Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, where they can pursue their interests in fields such as engineering or computer science. Private schools include Bnos Yisroel, which serves girls in preschool through 12th grade and receives a C-plus rating. The two other private options are not yet rated on Niche — Cheder Chabad offers a coed preschool, then kindergarten through eighth graders take classes with their own gender. Mesivta Neimus Hatorah is a small, all-boys high school with a 4-1 student-teacher ratio.

Recreation at the JCC and the Cylburn Arboretum
One of the most popular recreation spaces is the Jewish Community Center, where Jewish and non-Jewish members can use the gym and participate in children’s programs. At the eastern edge of the neighborhood is the Irvin Luckman Memorial Park, which has tennis courts, playgrounds and walking paths. Levine says that residents also enjoy the Cylburn Arboretum, where people can tour the gardens around an 1800s stone villa. In October, the arboretum hosts Halloween-themed evening walks around the grounds for an event known as ArBOOretum. They offer spring and summer nature camps and yoga classes as well. The Pimlico Race Course is another nearby attraction, which brings large crowds to watch horse races and concerts, but for Glen residents, it mainly means increased traffic, Levine says. The largest event — the Preakness Stakes — takes place the third Saturday in May. Pimlico is currently under renovation, so concerts and races will not take place there until it reopens in 2025.

To connect with Interstate 695, people can take Reisterstown Road, about 4 miles north.
