Harlem Park is shaped by change and continued resilience
The historic community of Harlem Park in West Baltimore is well over 150 years old. Taking on a range of different demographics and cultures from the early 1900s to the present day, Harlem Park has evolved from a countryman’s estate to a civil war encampment to a strong African-American activist community and beyond.
Like many urban neighborhoods in Baltimore, Harlem Park has weathered its share of adversity. Targeted as the focus of a 1960s urban renewal project, many homes were demolished, as families were displaced and the community was mismanaged. Ill-conceived urban planning ideas, like the inclusion of 29 inner block parks and the Route 40 Project, also known as the “highway to nowhere," ultimately failed. Faced with disinvestment, poverty and blight, the community of Harlem Park suffered. Today, while many of these challenges remain true, Harlem Park is seeking to revitalize their community through renewed efforts between local and governmental stakeholders.
Harlem Square and Lafayette Square offer green park space
For some time outdoors, residents can head to Harlem Square where the Harlem Square Park offers 9 acres of open green space and walking paths. Residents can also walk along Gilmor Street, where the former Harlem Theater still boasts its majestic granite façade. Nearby, the larger Lafayette Square and Park offers more green space and a handful of beautiful 19th-century churches surrounding its perimeter. Parkgoers can stand on either side of the square and admire the gothic architecture and green serpentine stonework of the St. John AME Church or the cream-colored stone inlay of St. James’ Episcopal Church, both of which are over 150 years old. For a change of pace, residents can walk along the recently renovated greenway of West Franklin Street. Spanning four blocks along “the highway to nowhere,” these new pocket parks offer a walking path, lush landscaping and several outdoor-fitness stations.
Traditional Baltimore-style rowhomes line Harlem Park's streets
Housing options in Harlem Park consist primarily of traditional Baltimore-style rowhomes, many of which feature red-brick or stone facades and short front stoops. Price points range from $50,000 to $250,000, depending on the age, size and condition of the home.
Baltimore City Schools provide focused career pathways
