The historic community of Harlem Park in West Baltimore is well over 150 years old. Taking on a range of different demographics and cultures from the early 1900s to the present day, Harlem Park has evolved from a countryman’s estate to a civil war encampment to a strong African-American activist community and beyond.

Like many urban neighborhoods in Baltimore, Harlem Park has weathered its share of adversity. Targeted as the focus of a 1960s urban renewal project, many homes were demolished, families displaced and the community mismanaged. Ill-conceived urban planning ideas, like the inclusion of 29 “inner block parks” or the Route 40 project (known as the “highway to nowhere") both failed. Faced with disinvestment, poverty and blight, the community of Harlem Park suffered. Today, while many of these challenges remain true, Harlem Park is seeking to revitalize their community through renewed efforts between local and governmental stakeholders.

Housing options in Harlem Park consist primarily of traditional Baltimore-style row homes, many of which feature red-brick or stone facades and short front stoops. Price points here range from $50,000 to $250,000 depending on the age, size and condition of the home, with the lower price tags trending toward homes in need of total renovation.

Students here attend Baltimore City Schools like, Harlem Park Elementary/Middle and Carver Vocational-Technical High. Serving over 1000 students in ninth through twelfth grades, Carver High offers both college preparatory course and Career and Technology Education (CTE) pathways. Through CTE, students can earn industry licenses or certifications in more than a dozen pathways, ranging from construction & development skills—like electrical and masonry trades, to health & bioscience skills—like nursing assistant and pharmacy technician roles.

For all your daily essentials this area offers local mini-marts and convenience stores, and a Save A Lot supermarket where you can pick up your weeks worth of groceries.

For some time outdoors, residents won’t have to travel far to soak in the sun. Harlem Square and the Harlem Square Park offers 9-acres of open green spaces, walking paths and lots of trees. As you walk along Gilmor Street, be sure to catch a glimpse of the former Harlem Theater and its majestic granite façade.

Nearby the larger Lafayette Square and Park offers more green spaces and a handful of beautiful 19th century churches surrounding its perimeter. Stand on either side of the square and look up to admire the gothic architecture and green serpentine stonework of the St. John AME Church. Or enjoy the cream-colored stone inlay of St. James’ Episcopal Church, both of which are over 150 years old.

For a change of pace, take a walk along the recently renovated greenway of West Franklin Street. Spanning four blocks along “the highway to nowhere,” these new pocket parks offer a walking path, lush landscaping and several outdoor-fitness stations, too.
