More room in Howard Park
Though located within Baltimore’s limits, the neighborhood’s tree-shaded streets make the community feel like a suburban village far from the city. “In downtown, it’s all row houses, but here, nothing is touching. People have more room,” Smith says. Architectural styles range from contemporary to Colonial Revival and even Cape Cod, with many constructions dating back to the 1920s. Renovated homes in Howard Park often cost between $300,000 and $500,000, while those listed in “as-is” condition may sell from $200,000 to $250,000.Gwynn Oak Park and the Forest Park Golf Course
In the evenings, some people take their children to Gwynn Oak Park. It was once the site of an amusement park where demonstrations against segregation took place in the early 1960s, but damage from a 1970s hurricane caused the amusement park to shut down. Today, this 69-acre green space offers walking trails, a playground and a covered picnic area that residents can reserve for birthday parties and reunions. The community also borders the Forest Park Golf Course, which initially opened in 1934. The 18-hole, public municipal golf course is open year-round, except for on Christmas Day or when there are severe storms. Just a few blocks south of the golf course lies the city’s largest park, Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, with hiking trails, tennis courts and more than 1,000 acres of public space. Each spring, the Baltimore Herb Festival takes place in the park.Howard Park's newly rebuilt schools
A local campaign, known as Transform Baltimore: Build Schools, Build Neighborhoods, resulted in improvements to area schools as well. Calvin M. Rodwell Elementary/Middle School was rebuilt in 2020 to include collaborative spaces, technology classrooms and a multi-level wing for traditional classrooms. Niche gives it a C-minus rating. High school students are allowed to choose from district schools. Forest Park High School is the nearest option, and it also receives a C-minus. It reopened in 2018 with an indoor pool, drones and a television studio, incorporating new technology into its curriculum to prepare students for the future.
Community nonprofits strengthen Howard Park
Community members have worked hard to provide opportunities for residents and to keep the neighborhood a safe place to live. Howard Park citizens lobbied for a local grocery store, and after many years of having none, the ShopRite was built in 2014. The Gwynn Oak Methodist Church worked with Blue Water Baltimore to initiate a Howard Park tree-planting day in 2023. Some nearby nonprofit agencies help with first-time homebuyers to find affordable housing. They also assist owners facing eviction due to rising home costs.CityLink buses and other ways to get around Baltimore
With access to public transportation and nearby highways, residents have several ways to commute to work in the city. The Maryland Transit Administration’s CityLink buses stop along Liberty Heights Avenue, and the Rogers Avenue Metro station is less than 2 miles north. Drivers can take the four-lane Liberty Heights Avenue toward downtown and the Maryland Zoo, or drive west to connect with Interstate 695, the beltway which encircles the greater Baltimore area.Malls and takeout restaurants near Howard Park
Howard Park has a few takeout restaurants and several nearby shopping areas. People can pick up a quick bite along Liberty Heights Avenue, where choices include Fred's Carryout, known for its cheesesteaks, and Rock Seafood and Fried Crabhouse, which offers an extra-spicy seafood boil. The neighborhood is home to ShopRite, one of the largest grocery stores in the city of Baltimore. It includes a pharmacy, halal butcher and bakery. Within a 4-mile drive or short bus ride are Mondawmin and Security Square Mall, both of which feature national and local retailers. People can shop for fresh produce and local art at the Gwynn Oak Farmers Market, hosted outside the Security Square Mall on Sundays from July through October. Some locals venture to Mount Vernon, about 6 miles east, where they can dine on steamed mussels at a French bistro or taste slow-roasted Afghan-style lamb at the Helmand.
