A Baltimore community experiencing growth
The community of Johnston Square – just one mile outside of downtown Baltimore – packs a punch as a densely populated urban area. A mix of industry, residences, and renovated spaces, this neighborhood is currently undergoing revitalization efforts to rebuild a new Johnston Square. “It’s one of the hottest areas on the east side right now,” says Carl Smith, a Realtor at Smart Realty with 12 years of experience in the Baltimore area. “It was forgotten for a long time, but it’s right in the middle of the Johns Hopkins Hospital community and the University of Baltimore in Mt Vernon. So it's making a comeback.” Interstate 83 – which runs along the western edge of town – brings commercial traffic, including the five-star Ivy Hotel. “But you’re still in the city, so each block is different,” Smith adds.
Increased ownership of rowhouses and townhomes
Residents live almost exclusively in traditional Baltimore rowhouses and townhomes, some with Italianate or Federal architectural features. These two- to three-storied dwellings, some with colorful brick or stone facades, typically range between $125,000 to $350,000 for a larger space with recent renovations. In recent years, incentives provided by local organizations like Rebuild Metro have helped to promote increased rental and ownership in the Johnston Square community. Programs like Path to Own support home ownership for all incomes and backgrounds.

Rebuild Johnston Square Neighborhood programs
Similarly, local activist groups like Rebuild Johnston Square Neighborhood continue to push for change. While the CAP Index gives Johnston Square a crime score of 7 out of a possible 10, this organization – run by longtime resident and Executive Director, Regina Hammond – sponsors events such as community clean-ups, kids’ fun days, and street-beautifying projects like the Bee Safe Art Crosswalks.
Walking from local Meadery to sushi
For everyday essentials, residents can pop into one of the area’s mini-marts and convenience stores, and Save A Lot is just north. For larger shopping trips, locals can visit neighboring shopping plazas like Church Square Shopping Center, which features a Dollar General, a DLTR clothing store and several casual eateries. For a fun night out with pizza and brew, Charm City Meadworks is a local brewery specializing in pub food and draft mead drinks. “There’s a lot of restaurants on the west side near the University,” Smith says. Residents can walk a couple blocks for sushi at Minato and grab a drink at Turp’s, a sports bar in a brownstone.

Getting around on the Metro or I-83
Nearby is the Johns Hopkins Medical campus, a major employer in the area. Hopkins is the last of 14 stops on the city’s METRO Subway system, making commutes around the city easier. There are also several MDOT bus stops spread around Johnston Square, and Interstate 83 conveniently runs along the west side of town.
