Mayfield
Neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City 21213, 21218
Storied homes reflect Baltimore’s history
Mayfield is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its architectural diversity. “The homes bring character to Baltimore and define who the city is as a whole,” says William Savage, a Broker with Keller Williams who has over 17 years of experience in real estate. The neighborhood was built in three phases, with the oldest homes built between Lake Montebello and Hartford Road around the late 19th century. Homes in this area include wood-shingled Victorians with spacious, wrap-around porches, stained glass windows and lakefront views. The neighborhood expanded further east in the early 20th century with the construction of single-family homes and semi-detached homes. Homebuyers in this area will find American Four-Squares, Colonial Revivals, Tudors and Bungalows spaced along lots with an average size of about a quarter acre. South of Lake Montebello, traditional rowhomes and townhomes feature red brick exteriors and small porticos. Prices range from around $150,000 for a three-bedroom rowhome to $435,000 for a four-bedroom Colonial-style home.Miles of trails and acres of green space surround Mayfield
Mayfield is tucked between Lake Montebello, Clifton Park and Herring Run Park. “It feels like you’re deep in the country,” Rybczynski says. Lake Montebello sits just north of Mayfield, and residents can walk, bike or run along the one-and-a-half-mile loop surrounding the lakefront. Clifton Park is the former estate of Johns Hopkins, and locals can tour the historic Clifton Mansion, browse the five-acre Mother’s Garden or play a round of golf on the park’s 18-hole course. On the other side of the neighborhood is Herring Run Park, which features three playgrounds, a basketball court and a system of multi-use trails.Baltimore City Public School District offers school choice
Kids begin their education at Montebello Elementary/Middle School, which earned a C-minus from Niche. The district follows school choice for middle and high school, meaning that students can apply to attend the schools of their choice. Children can continue their education at Montebello Elementary/Middle School before moving to the nearby Baltimore City College, a public high school rated an A-minus. The high school has a focus on liberal arts and students may earn college credit through the International Baccalaureate Program. Mayfield is just south of Morgan State University and minutes from Johns Hopkins University.Events at St. Matthew United Church of Christ
St. Matthew United Church of Christ is home to the Maryland State Boychoir. The nationally renowned choral group hosts free concerts for residents, including weekly Sunday Evening Concerts throughout the summer. The Mayfield Improvement Association hosts community gatherings such as the Summer Block Party at St. Matthews.Interstate 95 provides access to Washington, D.C.
Residents are less than 5 miles north of downtown Baltimore. The Maryland Transit Administration provides local bus service to the community, with Route 54 making several stops along Hartford Road. An access point to Interstate 95 is about 5 miles east, making it easier to traverse the 50 miles south to Washington, D.C. With the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, commutes on the Baltimore Beltway will be impacted. “You’ll have to go all the way around to get to the other side, which could add about an additional hour to your travel time,” Savage says. The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is about 18 miles south of Mayfield.Cafés, restaurants and supermarkets on Hartford Road
While Mayfield is primarily residential, several businesses sit along Hartford Road. Arcola is a neighborhood café where neighbors can enjoy locally roasted coffee, pastries and small sandwiches in a homey, sunlit dining room. Further west on the thoroughfare, Koco’s Pub is an eclectic eatery known for its vibrant yellow exterior and homemade crab cakes, while the farm-to-table restaurant Maggie’s Farm serves Southern classics and elevated craft cocktails. For groceries, residents are about a mile east of Safeway.Proximity to Johns Hopkins Hospital
Johns Hopkins Hospital is about 3 miles south. The award-winning hospital features a Level I trauma center and is a research facility for the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
