A rising star in east Baltimore
The east Baltimore neighborhood of McElderry Park draws its name from Thomas McElderry, an influential Irishman who immigrated to the area in the early 1800s. Today, homebuyers will find a diverse residential community undergoing revitalization. “The area is kind of going through a change right now,” says Luis Arrazola, an auctioneer with A.J. Billig & Co. and a lifelong Baltimore resident. “It’s becoming very popular for investors, and there’s a good number of buyers looking for property, but mostly the community is made up of working folks who are trying to live their lives peacefully. On weekends, you see neighborhood kids out riding bikes now. I’m just really impressed with how it’s come up in the last couple of years.” With colorful murals adorning the buildings, an active community association and proximity to one of Baltimore’s best-loved parks, McElderry Park is well on its way to transformation.

Classic Baltimore row houses
Prospective homeowners will be greeted by the familiar sight of Baltimore’s classic row houses, which line the streets of McElderry Park. “It’s mostly two-story row houses, no single-family units,” Arrazola says. These tend to feature short front stoops and small backyard driveways that open onto alleyways where one is likely to bump into a neighbor while taking out the trash. Prices begin around $100,000 for homes requiring updating, rising to around $275,000 for fully renovated units. “Very few properties actually make it to market right now,” Arrazola continues. “When they do, they sell very fast. It’s a high-demand area.”
