Revitalized community near Johns Hopkins Medical Campus
Once a place of disrepair, today Middle East is experiencing a surge of revitalization, partly because of its location next to the bustling Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. “Being so close to the hospital is a major selling point,” says Derek Blazer. “The convenience to the campus, downtown and Interstate 83 are drawing people to that area.” Middle East is an up-and-coming neighborhood with a mixed-use feel, offering newly renovated residential and commercial spaces, a hub of employment and a new urban park.

Renovated rowhomes line Middle East's streets
Newcomers to the area can choose from two- or three-storied rowhouses with brick or stone exteriors and short front stoops. While most of these properties were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many buyers have completed overhauls to the interior, with new appliances, flooring, paint jobs and roofing. With the homes situated mere feet from the roadways, yard space is virtually nonexistent, though some provide private back decks and patios. Several of the sidewalk-lined streets here are dotted with mature trees to add a touch of greenery. Price points range from $100,000 to $310,000. Blazer says the area is part of “Johns Hopkins’ Live Near Your Work program, which provides money for down payments and closing costs to employees.”
