Renovated rowhomes line Middle East's streets
Newcomers to the area can choose from two- or three-storied rowhouses with brick or stone exteriors and short front stoops. While most of these properties were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many buyers have completed overhauls to the interior, with new appliances, flooring, paint jobs and roofing. With the homes situated mere feet from the roadways, yard space is virtually nonexistent, though some provide private back decks and patios. Several of the sidewalk-lined streets here are dotted with mature trees to add a touch of greenery. Price points range from $100,000 to $310,000. Blazer says the area is part of “Johns Hopkins’ Live Near Your Work program, which provides money for down payments and closing costs to employees.”Spacious parks in an urban setting
Newly designed Eager Park stretches across two blocks and offers a breath of fresh air amid an otherwise urban setting. Open fields are used for picnics, while kids enjoy running around the splash fountains and playground. It’s also been the site for community markets, giving free produce to nearby residents. Just a mile south, Patterson Park is a popular spot among locals who climb its famed three-story Pagoda, which features an observation deck overlooking the expansive green space. It also features one of two ice rinks in the city, basketball and tennis courts, and a playground. During the summer, people hop in the swimming pool, and a fenced-in dog park gives pups room to roam.Attending Baltimore City Public Schools
Students living in Middle East are zoned for Baltimore City Public Schools. They may attend Commodore John Rodgers Elementary School, which serves prekindergarten through eighth grades and earns a C rating from Niche. Students can enroll in the Project Lead the Way engineering program at C-minus-rated Patterson High School. Several college campuses are dotted throughout the Baltimore area, including Morgan State University, Towson University and Johns Hopkins University.Easy commute for Johns Hopkins employees
Johns Hopkins University and its Medical Campus are two major employers in the area. Residents in Middle East can easily walk to the medical center that spans more than 8 acres. An added benefit of living near the medical campus is access to the Maryland Transit Administration bus system, with 10 stops along Madison, Washington and Wolfe streets. Locals can also make the 2-mile drive into downtown Baltimore for the museums and restaurants or to enjoy the Inner Harbor’s waterfront promenade. Those looking to take a trip outside the city can catch a flight at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, which sits nearly 17.5 miles south and can be reached via Interstate 895.Mainstay market offers grab-and-go options
One of the added perks of living near the city center is the area’s walkability. Everyday essentials are situated along Washington Street. Stop by Starbucks for a cup of coffee, pick up prescriptions at Walgreens or grab a bite to eat at one of the nearby casual eateries, like Charley’s Cheesesteaks and Wings. 16 on the Park offers an upscale option. The rooftop restaurant offers city views and serves everything from lobster rolls to smash burgers. Locals looking to pick up takeout head to Helmand Kabobi, which has Middle Eastern-themed bowls, wraps and desserts. “Northeast Market is also close by and is a cool spot,” Blazer says. “There are several lunch spots there.” Established in 1885, the marketplace features local meat, seafood, produce vendors and some grab-and-go options – everything from pretzels to pizza and BBQ. Additional grocery staples can be found at the Save-A-Lot on East Monument Road.
