Mill Hill’s “Deck of Cards” block stretches 1,800 feet along Wilkens
If you’ve ever shuffled a deck of cards, then you’ll understand this neighborhood’s claim to fame. Mill Hill, a small community in Southwest Baltimore is home to the city’s longest block of row homes—1800 feet long to be exact—and it’s known as the “Mill Hill Deck of Cards.” Built in 1912 by developer Walter L. Westphaul, the 2600 block of Wilkens Avenue (and the row homes that line it) were designed for employees of nearby breweries and businesses.

Mill Hill’s architecture includes Italianate and Colonial styles
Bisected into two sections by Wilkens Avenue, the southern half of Mill Hill features some row houses, but is primarily industrial. The majority of the land is occupied by Sims Metal, a BGE Woodbrook Substation and several export and trucking businesses. North of Wilkens Avenue, Mill Hill is almost exclusively residential and this is where you’ll find the “Deck of Cards,” as well as additional housing options. The historic homes of Mill Hill will be recognizable by their location, but also because of their Italianate and Renaissance Revival architectural designs, marble stoops and ornamental balls that top the cornices of each home. In addition to these row house styles, prospective buyers can also choose from Daylight-styles, with front porches designed to allow sunlight in; or opt for early Colonial Revival-influenced styles. Originally sold for less than $1300 each, today homes in Mill Hill can sell for anywhere between $75,000 to $120,000, depending on the condition of the property.
