Designed around the original Washington Monument, Mount Vernon takes up a large swath of North Baltimore. “In the 19th century, Mount Vernon was considered the peak of Baltimore success,” says Francis O’Neill, reference librarian at the Maryland Center for History and Culture and Baltimore resident of over 40 years. “Most of the houses north of the Washington Monument were built in the 1860s, 1870s and 1890s.” While the wealthy upper crust of Baltimorean society no longer rubs shoulders in the row houses lining Washington Place, the area has taken on an identity as a destination for the artistically inclined in recent years. Home to the Peabody Institute and the Walters Art Museum, The Owl Bar and The Brewer’s Art, students and young professionals flock to Mount Vernon for live music and nights out on Charm City, once again filling the historic buildings with life.

Groceries and dining out in Mount Vernon
Options for grocery shopping directly in Mount Vernon are limited to the St. Paul Mini Mart on St. Paul Street, but fresh produce can be found 1 mile down Cathedral Street at Po Tung Oriental Grocery. Residents pick up necessities at the Walgreens on Ploy Street, while students at the nearby Maryland Institute College of Art will likely be frequenting Blick Art Materials one block away. “Restaurants are a tough business around here in particular,” O’Neill says. “They come and go quite frequently. There aren’t a lot of long-standing eateries.” All the same, a few staples remain. The Bun Shop serves Vietnamese coffee and pastries long into the night, making it a popular destination for conservatory students tirelessly working on compositions. The Owl Bar has taken up residence in the Belvedere Hotel, recreating an elegant Prohibition-era speakeasy in the heart of Charm City, and The Brewer’s Art serves gourmet meals and locally crafted beers in the basement of an early 20th-century townhouse.

Historic Maryland row houses
Many of Mount Vernon’s residential areas are remnants of Old Baltimore. “Everything north of the Washington Monument was built between 1860 and 1880,” O’Neill says. “They’re likely a bit older heading south. They were built as mansions, and over time they were converted to apartment buildings and condos.” Units in these converted mansions can range from $200,000 for a one-bedroom to $370,000 for a slightly larger two-bedroom unit. “Some of the houses are slowly starting to be converted into duplexes and private residences again,” O’Neill continues. “They’re historic buildings, but not all are protected, so additions are often made.” Like much of Baltimore, prices can vary wildly. A three-bedroom row house on Howard Street can be had for around $350,000, while closer to the center of Mount Vernon a three-bedroom townhouse can go for over $650,000.
