The O’Donnell Heights neighborhood in Southeast Baltimore got its start in the 1940s. As America entered World War II, steelworkers began searching for work in one of the city’s many manufacturing plants, including Bethlehem Steel and Martin Aircraft. This influx created an urgent need for housing, so the federal government constructed several blocks of multifamily homes to accommodate workers and their families. As the decades wore on, O’Donnell Heights developed a rough reputation with Charm City locals, reflected in the community’s overall CAP Index crime score of 6 and homicide score of 9 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. However, the appeal has not changed for those who call this neighborhood home. “It’s got its issues, but so does everywhere else,” says Realtor Mike Booz, associate broker with Signature Realty and lifelong Baltimore resident. “I’ve spent a good part of my life around the area, and I really believe in it. There are some houses here that, if you put them in the county, they’d sell for $100,000 more easily. It’s nice and quiet and very central. It’s city living with a county feel.”

Jimmy’s Famous Seafood, just down the road, is a chef-driven restaurant that offers the option to ship some of Maryland’s best crab cakes nationwide. “I’ve said it before, but nobody has food like the pizza shops and sub shops on that side of Baltimore,” Booz says. “Vinny’s has the biggest slices of pizza you’ve ever seen, probably a foot long or bigger. Between them and Jimmy’s, which have both been there forever, you can’t get much better.”
