Reservoir Hill
Neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City 21217
Distinctive Charm City row houses
Much of the housing stock in Reservoir Hill was constructed in the wake of World War I. These Baltimore row houses are quintessential to the city, featuring red brick and grey stone facades with various styles and features. Queen Anne and Spanish influences like towers, bulging bay windows and decorative balconies with onion-shaped arches stand across from square Federal-style homes with neat rows of windows adorning their streetside faces. “They’re like brownstones in New York City,” says Jimmy Okunola, a Realtor with eXp Realty who has sold homes in the area for 6 years. “They have so much distinct character to them. People are really proud of owning in the community.” Prices begin around $175,000, rising above $600,000 depending on renovation status and the number of bedrooms.Druid Hill Park
The north border of Reservoir Hill bumps against Druid Hill Park. This 745-acre green space is the oldest in Baltimore and one of the first landscaped public parks in America. On the south side of the park, residents enjoy strolling around the reservoir on the East Coast Greenway, watched over by the historic Moorish Tower. There are also baseball fields, basketball and tennis courts, playgrounds for children and a public swimming pool. The northern end of Druid Hill Park is home to an 18-hole disc golf course and to the Maryland Zoo, where locals and visitors alike can explore award-winning exhibits like the Penguin Coast or learn about their own backyard while exploring the Maryland Wilderness.Arts and education in Reservoir Hill
Children in Reservoir Hill may begin their education at Mount Royal Elementary/Middle School, which earns a B-minus. The school has recently introduced a coding program that focuses on exposing students to various basic computer science concepts early in their academic careers. Students then apply to their choice of Baltimore City public schools, including the Baltimore School for the Arts. This institution is rated B-plus and is Niche’s No. 1 public arts high school in the state of Maryland. Here, students spend four hours per day in standard academic classes and four hours preparing for careers in creative professions such as music, dance, and film and video production.Cultural festivals and Artscape
Reservoir Hill is right in the throes of some of north Baltimore’s most popular events, from the Baltimore County African American Festival hosted in Druid Hill Park to the annual Artscape, which takes place along Maryland Avenue. “Artscape is still a huge draw,” Okunola says. "A lot of people go there all summer for the street festivals and events. The last time I was there, it felt like bands were playing on every corner.” Residents are well within walking distance of both events, which feature live music on multiple stages, local vendor fairs and food trucks that fill the air with mouthwatering aromas.Cruising Charm City
Reservoir Hill sits at the convergence of Interstate 83, which provides quick access to downtown, and North Avenue, which cuts 4 miles west across Charm City to Leakin Park. Along North Avenue, residents can catch the Metro Rail at Penn North and be at shopping destination Owings Mills in roughly 15 minutes. Baltimore Washington International Airport is a 12-mile drive south on Route 295.Mondawmin, Towson and On the Hill
The closest grocery store to Reservoir Hill is the Shoppers at Mondawmin Mall, and residents can also head 2 miles north to Giant to stock up on groceries. Mondawmin Mall is the closest shopping destination, although many locals will travel 12 miles north to Towson Town Center, a much larger mall that offers over 180 retailers. On the Hill Café, just across the Maryland Institute College of Art campus, is a neighborhood favorite for fresh coffee and sandwiches that is often crowded with students finishing projects. A little further along Mount Royal Avenue, Mount Royal Tavern – affectionately known as MRT – has made a name for itself as one of Baltimore’s best-loved dive bars, serving simple food and affordable drinks late into the night.
