History by Baltimore’s Druid Hill Lake
Located just south of Druid Hill Park, Reservoir Hill is home to some of Baltimore’s finest and most storied architecture. “It’s thought of as homogenous, but it really was built in two waves,” says Francis O’Neill, reference librarian for the Maryland Center for History and Culture and a lifelong Baltimore resident. “Parts of the neighborhood were extensions of neighboring Bolton Hill, but others were built to outdo it. The First World War had just ended when those were constructed, so you’ll see Spanish and Moorish influence in the architecture.” The neighborhood largely came up when apartment-style living was popular in Baltimore; as the appeal of the suburbs grew, many of these 10-room apartments were subdivided into more manageable living spaces. Reservoir Hill was conceived at least in part as an escape from the restrictive covenants of its neighbor, and today it remains a bastion of artistic expression, open green space and distinctive history in Charm City.

Distinctive Charm City row houses
Much of the housing stock in Reservoir Hill was constructed in the wake of World War I. These Baltimore row houses are quintessential to the city, featuring red brick and grey stone facades with various styles and features. Queen Anne and Spanish influences like towers, bulging bay windows and decorative balconies with onion-shaped arches stand across from square Federal-style homes with neat rows of windows adorning their streetside faces. “They’re like brownstones in New York City,” says Jimmy Okunola, a Realtor with eXp Realty who has sold homes in the area for 6 years. “They have so much distinct character to them. People are really proud of owning in the community.” Prices begin around $175,000, rising above $600,000 depending on renovation status and the number of bedrooms.

Druid Hill Park
The north border of Reservoir Hill bumps against Druid Hill Park. This 745-acre green space is the oldest in Baltimore and one of the first landscaped public parks in America. On the south side of the park, residents enjoy strolling around the reservoir on the East Coast Greenway, watched over by the historic Moorish Tower. There are also baseball fields, basketball and tennis courts, playgrounds for children and a public swimming pool. The northern end of Druid Hill Park is home to an 18-hole disc golf course and to the Maryland Zoo, where locals and visitors alike can explore award-winning exhibits like the Penguin Coast or learn about their own backyard while exploring the Maryland Wilderness.

Cultural festivals and Artscape
Reservoir Hill is right in the throes of some of north Baltimore’s most popular events, from the Baltimore County African American Festival hosted in Druid Hill Park to the annual Artscape, which takes place along Maryland Avenue. “Artscape is still a huge draw,” Okunola says. "A lot of people go there all summer for the street festivals and events. The last time I was there, it felt like bands were playing on every corner.” Residents are well within walking distance of both events, which feature live music on multiple stages, local vendor fairs and food trucks that fill the air with mouthwatering aromas.
