Saint Joseph’s is a small Southwest Baltimore neighborhood, often chosen for its relative affordability compared to nearby Irvington and Edmonson Village. The neighborhood was named after Saint Joseph’s Monastery Parish, which was first constructed in the 1880s. “This is a nice area because there’s a lot of history here,” says Joseph Schuberth, director of marketing and communications at Mount Saint Joseph High School. “We as a school have been around since 1876, so we’ve seen a lot of legacy families come through. We’re happy to have them continue that tradition, but it’s also nice to see new people come into the area from the city and county to create their own legacies.” Cozy brick row houses average in price around $120,000, similar to homes in Allendale and Carroll-South Hilton. Casual eateries and mini-marts sit along Old Frederick Road, South Hilton Street and Edmondson Avenue. Students attend schools within the Baltimore City Public Schools system, which is graded an overall C-plus on Niche. Folks can get together at the Fred B. Leidig Recreation Center nearby to play sports, learn new skills or have a place to hang out after school. The neighborhood’s CAP Index score is an overall 5 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. However, the score for homicide is 9.

Saint Joseph’s Monastery Parish was built in the 1860s & remains a historical landmark.
A Catholic presence in Southwest Baltimore
Residents may attend or tour Saint Joseph’s Monastery Parish, which has stunning Gothic architecture, intricate stone-inlay and stained-glass windows. Able to hold around 500 parishioners at a time, the church has undergone several evolutions to grow the Catholic community in the area. Across the street, the church’s New Cathedral Cemetery is the only one operated by the Archdiocese of Baltimore, featuring handcrafted statues and monuments belonging to residents from as far back as the 1700s. On Frederick Avenue, Mount Saint Joseph High School is a private Catholic school for young men and is graded an A on Niche. The school serves 12 different counties around the city and the suburbs. “Ninety-three percent of our students who took Advanced Placement tests this year earned a three or higher, which can translate to college credit,” Schuberth says. “There’s also a Service Class elective for our seniors. They may be put into the local elementary school as mentors or grow vegetables on campus. Our Sustainability Club grows herbs and vegetables in their hydroponic garden, which they bring to a community table where people can take the food for free.” The monastery hosts a ring ceremony for the school’s junior class when they are presented with their class rings.
