Walkable South Baltimore offers quaint living and local gastropubs

South Baltimore offers proximity to popular riverfront parks, such as the iconic Fort McHenry, and residents are close enough to walk to the bars and nightlife in neighboring Federal Hill. Buyers can find turn-of-the-century brick rowhouses along compact city streets and travel around town by bus, car or boat, with Downtown Baltimore just a couple of miles away.

Brick rowhouses and luxury apartments are available

The housing market is predominantly Federal-style rowhouses, which are an architectural staple across the city. Many of the older homes were built between the 1880s and the early 1900s, though a handful of new construction townhouses are also available. These homes often range from the lower $200,000s to the lower $700,000s, varying by square footage, remodel status and age. There are also a handful of luxury apartment complexes around the neighborhood, like The Quill by Alta. “It’s not too different from Federal Hill, but here the homes here aren’t bound by historical guidelines,” says James Baldwin, a Realtor with Compass with over 18 years of experience serving the greater Baltimore area. “There are smaller homes and it draws lots of first-time homebuyers. There's also generational homeowners who’ve lived around there for sixty to seventy years.”

Riverfront parks like Fort McHenry are nearby

Though this is a mostly residential area, South Baltimore residents are minutes away from riverside parks along the nearby Baltimore Peninsula:

  • Swann Park has fields for baseball or football, and is often used by youth sport leagues.
  • West Covington Park has the South Point Waterfront Music Venue, and access to the Baltimore Peninsula Trail.
  • Fort McHenry has trails and sweeping views of the Patapsco River.
  • Latrobe Park has ball fields, tennis courts, trails and playgrounds.

Diverse spots to shop, dine and drink

Residents can choose from a handful of local establishments just a short walk from home. “It’s got walkability to nightlife options," says Baldwin. "South Baltimore has its own bars and locally owned gastropubs.” Hair of the Dog is along Hanover Street, offering drinks, bar bites and brunch. People also visit for the weekly events, including trivia and gameday watch parties.

The bustling Federal Hill neighborhood is just north of South Baltimore and is a popular destination for its bars, shops and restaurants. The historic Cross Street Market has several local merchants selling produce and counter-serve street food. There’s also a walkable business corridor along Charles Street, where locals can try artisan donuts from Dulceology Bakery or grab beer and wings from Delia Foley’s Pub & Eatery. Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium is also less than a mile from the area, meaning visitors can walk to a Ravens game or to hear concerts from chart-topping musicians.

Choice options in the City Schools district

Baltimore City Public Schools serves the South Baltimore area. The district uses a centralized choice system that allows families to apply to magnet schools, open enrollment options and charter programs, with placement determined by academic criteria, available space or random lottery draws.

Many ways to travel around South Baltimore

Downtown Baltimore is a 2-mile drive north for commuters. The global headquarters for Under Armour is a major employer in the city, located just a mile south in Port Covington. CityLink Silver buses stop along main roads in the neighborhood, such as Light Street. Nearby ferry terminals in Locust Point, Fort McHenry, and Federal Hill serve as stops for Baltimore Water Taxis, offering a unique way to travel around the Inner Harbor. Major highways, including Maryland Route 295 and Interstate 95, are nearby, making it easy for residents to travel across the East Coast or catch a flight out of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, located 9 miles south.
