Quiet residential streets near the waterfront
Upper Fells Point, an extension of the historic Fells Point neighborhood, is located just a few blocks north of the waterfront, east of Patterson Park and south of the Johns Hopkins Hospital campus. “The waterfront of Fells Point itself is kind of off the beaten track a little bit, so it’s not as touristy of a spot — you’ve got a lot of locals who live there,” says Mark Simone, a Realtor at Keller Williams Legacy who has been selling in the area for 20 years. Throughout the 19th century, it was populated by Irish and German immigrants seeking housing and employment in Baltimore’s industrial regions. These cultural roots can still be seen in its older rowhomes and architectural landmarks like St. Michaels German Catholic Church and the Convent of Notre Dame. Today, Upper Fells Point benefits from the upbeat vibe of Fells Point while also being quieter thanks to its largely residential nature. “it’s a little artsy, more so than a lot of other areas downtown,” Simone says. “There’s a lot of music. So Upper Fells Point and Fells Point have kind of the same genre.”

Affordable historical rowhomes
Larger three-story Greek Revival rowhomes line the neighborhood’s main roads, with smaller two-story rowhomes, often made of brick, stretched along side streets. “It has an old-world charm about it,” Simone says. “The homes were built in the early 1900s, some of them in the late 1800s, and there’s just a lot of history around them. A lot of things have been preserved, even while going through a lot of different iterations of renovations.” According to Victoria Peña, the broker-owner at Home-Pro Realty who has been selling homes in the area for 34 years, people are often drawn here for its affordability. “It’s one of the few places where you can still get a lot of house for the money,” she says, adding that it’s an up-and-coming area where a lot of homes are being renovated, which has led to a lot of competition. Many homes cost between $250,000 and $350,000, but homes with more amenities, parking or full renovations can cost anywhere between $400,000 and $600,000. On the flip side, homes in need of renovation can fall into the $100,000 range. The CAP Index crime score is 5 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. The city of Baltimore has a “Comprehensive Violence Prevention Plan,” which it updates every other year.
Hurricane season can impact Baltimore, but Upper Fells Point has only a minor risk of flooding. The biggest concern with storms is the wind damage, as there’s a major risk of severe wind factors.

Arcade games at Johnny Rad’s Pizzeria Tavern
While Upper Fells Point is largely residential, local restaurants are still abundant. Johnny Rad’s Pizzeria Tavern is a local favorite, offering brick oven pizza with a ton of vegan options in a casual bar setting where locals can play Skee-Ball and other arcade games. El Taquito Mexicano Restaurant is also well-known for its carnitas tacos and tepache, a sweet drink made from pineapple peels and rinds. Locals also head just outside the neighborhood to satisfy their sweet tooths at Bmore Licks, which offers over 30 flavors of homemade ice cream and even makes treats for local dogs. Locals can see plays right in the neighborhood at Fells Point Corner Theatre.
Bodegas scattered throughout Upper Fells Point make it easy for residents to pick up essentials on the way home. When they’re looking for a larger grocery store, they head a few blocks outside of the neighborhood to The Seasoned Olive, a gourmet grocery store that’s fittingly painted green, or to Whole Foods. Another major benefit of Upper Fells Point, Simone says, is that it’s within walking distance of Fells Point proper — and all the shopping, museums, dining, nightlife and abundant live music events it has to offer.

Food, drinks and music at Fell’s Point Fun Festival
Every fall, the community comes together to celebrate the Fell’s Point Fun Festival, which is the largest live music event in Baltimore, attracting around 50,000 people. “It’s a very artsy festival,” Simone says. “There’s lots of artwork for sale, there’s live music. It’s a blast.” On the far side of Patterson Park, the Creative Alliance, recognizable by its neon “Patterson” marquee—a nod to its previous life as a movie theater—hosts programs, workshops and events throughout the year, including an annual fundraiser gala, the Marquee Ball, and the Great Halloween Lantern Parade and Festival.

Sports and picnics at Patterson Park
Peña and Simone agree that the 133-acre Patterson Park is a huge draw for residents. It offers multiple athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, a public swimming pool and even an ice rink, making it a frequent spot for intramural sports teams. Its dog park, indoor recreation center and the recognizable Patterson Park Observatory, a pagoda built in 1890, are also popular. Boats haven’t been on the lake in years, but residents can still fish or observe wildlife there. The urban neighborhood also has a community garden marked by a beautiful mural. Just a few blocks away, residents head to Fells Point’s marinas to spend a day out on the Patapsco River.
