A cozy springtime village in Southwest Baltimore
Violetville is a southwestern Baltimore neighborhood that earns its name from the wild violets that bloom on lawns throughout the springtime. It is a small cluster of midcentury townhouses and single-family homes that sits right on the county line and offers a quiet country retreat without leaving the city too far behind. “The benefit of Violetville is that it’s insulated. You have St. Agnes Hospital on one side, industrial buildings and Interstate 95 on the other, so you’re kind of locked into this private segment of the city,” says Realtor Chris McDonald with Fathom Realty, a lifelong resident of Baltimore. “It’s Baltimore City. There are rats and people who don’t make sure their trash can lids are on tight enough. But really, you can’t get better for value and safety in a starter home than if you’re looking here.” While residents enjoy having easy access to all the electricity of downtown Baltimore, multiple neighborhood associations ensure that Violetville retains its cozy village atmosphere.
On the outskirts of Charm City
Prospective homeowners will find plenty to choose from in Violetville. “It’s full of solidly built brick houses from the 1950s with real hardwood floors,” McDonald says. “The townhouses are all in good condition, and you can buy here for cheaper than you can rent.” Townhouses often sit back from the curb, with long concrete walkways leading to covered front porches. Many also feature backyards with room enough for a patio or a small garden. Prices start around $170,000 and rise as high as $270,000 depending on the number of bedrooms and the condition of the home. There are also a few single-family homes available. Cottages, ranch-styles and Modern Traditional builds are the most common, ranging in price from $160,000 to around $350,000 depending on year of construction.
Public and private schools in Violetville
Children in Violetville attend Baltimore City Public Schools such as Violetville Elementary/Middle School, which scores a C from Niche. Students then apply to their choice of the city’s public high schools. Among the closest is the Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy, also rated C, which supports career pathways in emergency medicine, nursing and dental assistantships. There are also private options available. Young men can attend Mount Saint Joseph High School just 2 miles from the neighborhood, while young women can study at Mount De Sales Academy 5 miles away.
Between Route 1 and the Beltway
Residents of Violetville enjoy easy access to the three major highways which hem the neighborhood in. Interstate 95 provides the most direct route to downtown Baltimore just 5.5 miles north. Interstate 695, better known as the Baltimore Beltway, loops around the city and is the quickest way to get to Baltimore Washington International Airport 8 miles south. And Route 1 connects the community to both healthcare lifeline Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital and Halethorpe station, where locals can catch the MARC train and arrive in Washington, D.C. in just over 40 minutes.
Friends of Violetville Park
The communal backyard of the neighborhood is Violetville Park, where residents have planted a pollinator garden. Children play soccer games in the open field and practice free throws on the recently updated basketball court while bumblebees plunge into trumpet flowers. Neighborhood association Friends of Violetville Park is currently in the process of updating the park’s playground equipment and is active in organizing community events such as the Spring Fling Party, where locals gather to play games, enjoy live music and picnic on the lawn.
Nick’s Crab Market and Rheb’s Candies
Violetville residents can shop for groceries near home at Weis Markets on Maiden Choice Lane or at the Giant in Wilkens Beltway Plaza, both within 2 miles of the neighborhood. The nearest Walmart is just 2 miles in the other direction at Lansdowne Station, as is a Home Depot for any weekend project needs. Casual eateries surround the community, but for summertime crab feasts locals head to Nick’s Crab Market, which sources their catch exclusively from the Choptank River. For sweet treats, Rheb’s Candies has been serving homemade chocolates, brittles and toffee since 1950.
Baltimore City and UMBC
Violetville is only 5.5 miles from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, so residents are well positioned to take advantage of all the city has to offer. Orioles games at Camden Yards, concerts at Power Plant Live! and movies on the Maryland Science Center’s massive IMAX screen are all within reach. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County is also just 3 miles away, so locals can head to campus for live music and stand-up comedy at the Proscenium Theatre.

Violetville is definitely a gem in Baltimore City. It's a very family friendly community. We have probably the most enthusiastic Halloween in the area. There is an elementary and middle school within walking distance. It's got a great neighborhood park with a track, playground and our community association holdsevents throughout the year.

I have lived here for sixteen years. My home has more than doubled in value since I purchased it. We are a small enclave, tightly knit with a active neighborhood association. I have no idea where Niche gets its crime stats for this area, but we do not have 3,000 murders or 14,000 burgleries per year.
