Renovated West Baltimore row houses
Most of Walbrook's housing stock consists of two-story row houses, set back from the sidewalks by concrete stairways leading to covered front porches. Some feature flat red brick facades, while others are distinguished by rounded upper-story bay windows. Others are done up with Tudor accents like exposed beams threaded through the brick. “At the 2000 block of Dukeland Street – we call it Dukeland Crossing now – that was once a strop of all blighted homes that we renovated from the studs,” Domneys says. “It brought a lot of people back to a block that it used to be you didn’t want to turn down it. We’re continuing to do as much as we can to bring back pride of ownership to the community.” Prices begin around $155,000 and rise to around $300,000 depending on the size and condition of the property. There are also detached single-family homes on the western side of the neighborhood, many featuring long walkways and mid-sized front yards. These homes, mainly in American Foursquare and Victorian styles, cost anywhere from $145,000 to $330,000 depending on number of bedrooms and status of renovations.Leon Day and Leakin Park
Walbrook residents can get their fill of time outdoors at Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park. This 1,000-plus acre green space is the second-largest woodland park in the country, featuring miles of hiking trails that trace the course of Gwynns Falls beneath the canopy of trees. Local children enjoy the Carrie Murray Nature Center, where they can visit the hawk house and learn about the natural ecosystem of the city. The park is also home to several playgrounds and to Leon Day Park, where locals meet up for pickup basketball games or swing for the fences on the baseball diamond.Baltimore public schools and one of Maryland’s HBCUs
Children in Walbrook are zoned to attend Gwynns Falls Elementary School, which earns a C-minus from Niche and serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade. They may then proceed to their choice of the city’s middle and high schools. For middle school, Katherine Johnson Global Academy is the closest, a gifted and advanced learning site that focuses on S.T.E.A.M. Edmondson-Westside High School, also a C-minus, is home to a boys’ basketball team that recently won back-to-back state championships. Another nearby option is Bard High School Early College, which scores a C-plus and allows students to earn their associate's degree alongside their high school diploma. Walbrook is also close to Coppin State University. “Coppin State is one of three historically Black colleges in Maryland,” Domneys says. “And they’ve been adding some new buildings lately as well. The new construction right at the corner of North Avenue and Warwick – that’s all brand new.”A quick ride to the Inner Harbor
Walbrook is just over 5 miles from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, where locals and tourists alike gather for concerts at Power Plant Live and Pier Six Pavilion. Children will enjoy wondering at the exhibits at the National Aquarium, while Horseshoe Casino Baltimore offers a number of high-end restaurants and bars where fans can catch the Orioles and the Ravens on gamedays. Movie fans can take in the latest blockbuster on the Maryland Science Center’s massive IMAX screen.North Avenue and the Marc train
Walbrook sits between the Gwynns Falls Parkway, which loops around Mondawmin Mall 1 mile to the north, and North Avenue, which cuts east across the city to Interstate 83. “The West Baltimore Marc train station is not far, and that attracts a lot of buyers,” Domneys says. “And the Penn-North subway station is nearby as well, so there are lots of options for getting around the city.” The CityLink Gold bus line runs along North Avenue, bringing passengers to the Shops at Canton Crossing in just over an hour. At West Baltimore station, residents can catch the Marc Orange Line, which will bring them to Baltimore Washington International Airport in roughly 35 minutes and farther to Washington, D.C. in under an hour.Within distance of Walbrook Junction and the nightlife of Hampden
Save A Lot in Walbrook Junction Shopping Center is the closest grocery store to the neighborhood, although residents can also pick up fresh produce at the Shoppers at Mondawmin Mall, 1 mile north. The mall is home to over 130 retailers and plenty of casual eateries. Hampden, one of Baltimore’s chic restaurant and nightlife districts, is just 4 miles east of the neighborhood, where folks can crowd into the Bluebird Cocktail Room for a specialty drink or into Zissimos Bar for a live music and a cold bottle of National Bohemian.
